Yes! Andrew I know you've at least looked into the possibility! ;)

Yes, Justin is still working out the details, I'd be happy to distribute the product for him.

How much do your guys' rigs weight?

I just had aluminum 3 x 4' length sections, 1.75 OD (1.50 ID) custom cut for me.
Using 1.5' smaller tubes w/ 1.50 OD to "fit" inside, with drilled holes and bolts locking everything together.

Comes in at 12' long and I'm certainly able to hold it and pick it up but for some reason it just feels pretty heavy. I've never really held aluminum before, or compared to anything else.. but it feels heavy.

Will be using the Avenger's w/ Super Clamps.

12 feet isn't going to get you much except a really distorted shot.

Anything under 15 lbs is going to be super flimsy.

My standard 20-ft boom is 17 lbs, and is rigid enough to be used without a stabilization cable, though many choose one to make their lives easier lol

Thanks for the input! I shall hope for the best. If I had the extra couple hundred I'd definitely take you up on one of your awesome setups man! I can only dream ... maybe someday down the road when I'm more serious about this. For now, just a fun project I've been wanting to give a go!

Edit: Weighed my tubing, comes in at 5lbs per 4' length, plus the two fitting pieces at 1.5' each! More than 15lbs! :)

Edit # 2: Began drilling my tubing! Went very well - first time using a drill in this application.

Nice Subie :-)

And now that I think about it, you can use less than 12 feet if you use just the hood, or just the trunk, some guys do that all the time. This is a way to get a really clear shot too; less material = less bounce.

Thanks my friend!! I imported my Subi from Japan 3 years ago, love it so much especially in the harsh winters we face up here in the rockies of Canada..

Picked up my magic arm tonight..

Also finished drilling and sanding (filing) all edges of my boom so that it's nice and smooth!! Weight is 17.4lbs at 12ft!! I'm pretty damn impressed with myself considering I've literally never played around with a drill before. (Super old-skool hand drill, single speed corded!)

Just a huge thank you everyone in this thread because there's a huge huge huge amount of resources contained within these 700+ pages!! Super helpful so thank you!! I'm really enjoying this project so I will soon post some of my results as a total rig n00b!!

I take it from your comment and flickr photos that you live in Calgary or nearbouts, and go to the Timmy's meets in the SW? I've been to those a few times myself. Obviously not living there now. Nice rolling shots by the way.

Thank you very much! Yup, I live in the north end of the city. I'm actually the organizer/ creator of the Subaru club's Timmies meetups (external link) (I started it about 2 yrs ago)!! They don't meet in the South though, I think there's been a couple one-off nights where everyone collectively decided to meet at a different location but typically it's North East about 10 mins from my house haha!

Pick up the camera platform so you can shoot right-side up.

This actually came with that platform inside it! I'm very happy I went this route and got the magic arm. I'm on a budget, and can certainly upgrade my boom down the road. But, my thought on the magic arm was that I would have it forever and could also use it for different applications that just the rig. Spent the extra penny and got the entire kit and I'm glad I did. I just got back from a very short "test" of the rig. Went very well but I can say I'm glad I got the arm because it made it SO much easier to mount the camera. I think that was the easiest part really! Pics to come soon!! (hopefully I'm not cluttering this thread up too much haha!)

My rig is complete!! I went out this morning and took my first shot - I can't wait to share that image.
I'm so impressed with how it turned out considering it was my first shot ever using a rig!!

For now I'll share the setup, just finishing up the edit - I'll post my result soon!!

Make sure to do the following...

- wax the area where you plan to put the cups
- always install the cup by an edge, or seam
- try not to install both cups on the same panel/glass
- spread the cups out as far as possible
- keep an eye on your pumps

Thank you very much for the fantastic pointers, I'll be sure to make note of all of them and remember when I'm out! I did keep checking the pumps and even gave them a few quick pumps just as a precaution, the red stayed hidden the whole time about an hour!

Here's my very first ever rig shot. It's definitely far from perfect but I'm happy with my start! A bit over exposed, my ND filter was filthy and covered in water spots (from shooting some waterfalls previously), and I certainly need some practice in post.. but I'll share!
