Well if reflections are good then this is the place. I am going to try a couple of drive by's about first light to see what the traffic situation is.

Looks like an awesome location! Whats the speed limit on that road? I've been pretty bold lately, if the speed limit is 25mph or less and it isn't during peak travel hours, I've just been making cars go around me. I've been lucky with police and regular people. They are mostly just curious and I always show them the shot if they ask what I'm doing (I tether to a tablet). Once they see the shot they usually get really excited. The number question I have been asked, "Is this a google car!?"

How did the wrap hold up to the suction cups?

the roof is painted so I didn't attach it to any wrapped areas thankfully. :)

My most expensive rig subject to date, was intimidating to say the least. The windshield was very thin so had to be extra careful with cup placements.

Damn, both are fantastic. Love what you've done with the exhaust too!

No chance of rigging with all the rain so editing some old shots I haven't had a chance to do. Wanted to extend the road between the gate posts to make it look like it wasn't just driving into the grass. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to look right.

Hey guys, so I'm quite new to this forum, and quite new to car rig photography in general. Have known about it for about a year now, and initially tried using VirtualRig but i didn't like my results with the trial software. Right around Christmas time I finally picked up a rig that I found on Craigslist for $240. It was actually being sold by a member here who posted it for sale a couple years ago but kept it. In the past 2 weeks I've read probably around 400 pages of this thread and have gained lots of knowledge. That actually led me to build my own improved rig that I finished a few days ago to replace this one. But for now, here is my experience with this one.

It's 2 Manfrotto cups and clamps, a 10ft 1/16" inch aluminum tube and a 9ft ⅛" inch tube with small ½" aluminum tubes to triangulate support instead of cables. Coupled together with a split 12inch long tube with 6 hose clamps. I found it to be a bit shaky because of the 1/16 inch tubing. But I managed and ended up getting a decent shot. Not the most flattering angle for my buddy's R32 GT-R but I'm happy with the result. Spent much longer than I wanted to editing this, particularly trying to remove the suction cup which I should haven't even placed on the passenger front window. However the car is vinyl wrapped so I didn't have much flexibility.

Shot with my small Panasonic GH3 mirrorless as I'm waiting on my Nikon 20mm f1.8 to arrive for my D600 :).

I shot this early last week, and since them I've actually built another rig. I'll post it shortly.

Edit: I'm now selling this rig! Just the 2 long poles and vertical support for this rig for $100 if anyone is interested and can pick up in the Los Angeles area.

After reading several hundred pages I decided to stop using the somewhat shaky and slow to set up rig I just bought around Christmas and decided to build my own DIY rig.

I went to Industrial Metal Supply and picked up 5 pre-cut 44" sections of "remnant stock" 6061 T6 aluminum 2" OD ⅛" wall tube, and a 50" section of 1.75" OD ⅛" wall tube to use as 4 slip-fit joints. I then took them to a local machine shop and had them drill holes, cut and turn down the 1.75" inner tubes just a bit so they would fit. In addition, they went ahead and inserted the 4 inner tubes into the 2" tubes, epoxied them in and added studs so there would be zero play. They did an awesome job.

IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/sPnsNOhh.jpg

Though there are 2 holes on either side drilled, I find that the tolerance is so tight that I only need to secure each joint with 1 bolt. I'm thinking of going to pick up quick release pins to make setup and break down even faster. Currently I'm using ¼-20 x 2.5" stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts.

Total weight of this 5-section 18.3 foot rig pole with hardware is 19lbs.
Total spent on the poles, machining and joiner hardware: ~$195

In order to protect the ends of the tubes from dings and scratches in transport and storage, I went to mcmaster.com and for $20. bought 1.75" and 2" ID vinyl end caps. (I have 5 extra 1.75" ID end caps if anyone wants them)

IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/uepLl7Fh.jpg

For storage and transport I bought a 50" OnStage padded speaker stand bag, and Amazon Basics packing cubes. The storage cubes are of a thin nylon material with a mesh top, so I'm not sure how long they're going to hold up but at their price they're worth a shot. It's a tight fit, but everything fits and the tubes don't move around.

Bag weight with the entire kit in it is a whopping 42lbs.. Just a bit heavier than I was expecting, haha.
Kit includes:
- 5-section 18.3' pole with joiner hardware
- 2 Manfrotto and 1 filmtools 6" suction cups
- Avenger swivel head and 3" and 6" threaded pin extensions
- 4 Manfrotto superclamps
- Manfrotto camera plate
- Kupo Max Arm
- Vertical coated steel cable tension support system

All I really want to do now is swap out these 2 manfrotto cups for more flexible Rig-Pro cups and swivels, and get the Rig-Pro 10" cup to rig and 30" rig to camera extension bars.

Test of the new rig:

This rig oscillates much less than the last one, is faster to setup and break down, especially when I'm by myself, and is much easier for me to transport.

First and only shot so far with my new rebuilt rig:

I'm still familiarizing myself with the ins and outs of photoshop since I've always been a Lightroom editor but I'm fairly happy with the result :)

@jshawfoto what a great read. That rig is super sexy to look at! Looking forward to seeing more of your shots with it! It looks like a pro set up and what a fantastic first shot with it!

A little tip would be that for some reason shots look better "downhill" with the tilt the opposite way so that the car is nose down. Don't know why it does but it just seems to work better in my opinion :) In saying that, yours does give the feeling that it is speeding round a bend climbing a mountain so it works too :)
