Since you're shooting at ISO 1600, it looks like high ISO noise to me...

Assuming you at least have a tripod (and maybe a cable release?) why are you using such a high ISO? The moon is simply a sunlit object so you can start at:

ISO 100
SS 1/100
F/16

and work from there. Some folks subscribe to what is known as the "Moony 11 Rule." Similar to the "Sunny 16 Rule" but you just give it one extra stop of light with f/11 instead of f/16. As in all things, these are simply guidelines yielding a starting point from which you can bracket as necessary.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure you could have gotten away with a slower shutterspeed and lower ISO

i use tripod but no cable release. I use the 500mm lens and i can see some vibration in the viewfinder.

let me try again tonight with lower iso/shutter speed and f16 or f18?

you don't need that kinda of DOF for the moon since it's basically focused at infinity and it's a flat object. f/8 has always worked well for me. Don't forget to use MLU.

it mat also help to suspend a loaded backpack or other convenient heavy object from the underside of the tripod head to stabilize the tripod. That and timer/mirror lock up.

The moon is flat? I suppose the earth is too! ;):lol::lol:

For the OP...With a long lens....be sure you use Mirror Lock and hanging your gear bag from the center column of the tripod does help.

You only need something like iso 400 f8 1.250...youll be fine with that but yeah use the cable release or timer because your gunna be vibratin all over with that 500. my 200 needed at least 2 seconds everytime to calm down

At 384467 km, I don't think you have to worry about DOF even if it is spherical.
