I just purchased a 5D and was wondering what a good customized picture style setting would be for portraits? Does the standard portrait picture style setting work well? I have snapped a few pictures with it so far and the skin tones look really red. Thanks for your time and advice.

Shoot RAW and forget about picture styles. It's all in the post-processing. If you must use them, Neutral, imho, is the way to go.

I redo the factory settings. One with +2 contrast, one with -2 contrast, and one with saturation +1. Neutral and faithful I don't touch. The rest I do monochrome. +/- 2 contrast, then add in orange and red filters.

Most of my shots are good to go if I get the exposure right. I try not to mess around too much with post processing, unless I'm trying to do something funky or totally save a blown shot (i.e. being sloppy, shooting without tripod, etc.).

Check my gallery, especially the Zion Color and Black White and Antelope Canyon stuff to see what straight out of the camera can do for you. Of course a good CPL does wonders too.

I can see how someone could get real creative in photoshop/lightroom etc. and do some amazing things. It's almost too much for me though and the style I'm after.

I would also say shoot RAW and adjust the picture style to suit using DPP.

Ditto. I have my standard "set-up" in camera and then adjust in DPP.

another vote for Faithful, 0 contrast, +1 tone, 0 saturation and + 5 sharpness. Any other tweaking I do in DPP.

It depends on what your desired "look" is. I shoot RAW. I will edit one picture in DPP to decide what I want, and then I just copy the "recipe" to all the other pictures in the series.

Different kinds of portraits require different settings. High key, low key, different skin tones, different backgrounds, "mood," etc... Shooting JPG is the equivalent of shooting Polaroids. I'de rather shoot a negative and control the processing myself. IE: Raw.

I set up mine to shoot green tint and B+W and they looked great when chimping.
BUT, I was shooting raw so they came up like a normal raw.
Everyone here said to do it in photoshop but shooting directly to jpg could be a time saver in situations.
Maybe shoot jpg and raw.

I was wondering the same thing on my 40D.

For anything important or one time I would shoot in RAW. However for most of my daily walking around shooting I like to keep it simple and shoot in jpg. Is ths PP on the camera itself okay? Does it hinder burst rate at all?

It wouldn't actually be "post processing" if its done in the camera. The camera applies the set as the shot is recorded. This shouldn't take any extra time than taking a standard photo in raw. What does take additional time is if you have noise reduction actively working. Then again, if you do...you probably aren't shooting bursts!
