Why would Canon Service Center lock my 400mm lens case?

I sent my 400mm f/2.8 IS in its case to the Canon Service Center to have the tripod ring serviced. When I got it back the case was locked.

Now Canon wants me to go to a local camera shop and see if they can open it. The two stores in town don't even have L lenses in stock let alone a big white storage case.

Canon says the locks are just to keep the case closed and they should be easy to open.

I'm a little ticked off that they would lock it at all since I sent it to them unlocked. The case is a nice place to store the lens but I would never consider locking it.

Ok, enough ranting. Any ideas short of poppin the rivets?

I have no idea. It may have run away with the key to my CPU that I never use. I bet if I find them I will discover a cache of missing socks. :)

You could always have them send you a key.

I got up one morning, couldn't find my socks, so I called Information. She said, "Hello, Information." I said, "I can't find my socks." She said, "They're behind the couch." And they were!

I'd be willing to bet that any locksmith worth his weight in salt could pick the locks on the case so fast he wouldn't feel right charging you. Until he saw the big white lens that is.

The guys at the Canon Service Center are just like guys at service centers for other stuff. They're a bunch of curious puppies who just can't wait to get into some serious trouble.

Do you think you can pick the lock with a hair pin?
