Omg. I just had a pretty scary/upsetting experience. I had borrowed a friends XSi to go shooting today and I loved it. Took about 200-300 hundred pictures and whatnot and once my card was full, I decided to put in a new one.

The one thing I absolutely HATE about the XSi is the fact that it uses SD memory cards. I always knew that the spring loaded slot was a recipe for disaster.

I reach for the card door, push in the card to eject it, my finger slips a little, and the card goes flying from the camera. It eventually finds it's new home in a sewer drain. :( not cool. I lose my card, and I lose my pictures. I would have never had this problem with compact flash.

Moral of the story: BE VERY CAREFUL OF HOW YOU EJECT YOUR MEMORY CARD.

That’s true, with a CF card you would have hurriedly plugged in a new CF card bending the pins and ruining the camera. ;):)

Moral: Don’t plug in CF cards quickly and don’t eject SD cards quickly. Neither are bullet proof and both can be screwed up.

Wow that sux, though I must say I have never heard of anything like that happening before, nor have I heard of someone bending CF card pins in a device. But I guess theres a first time for everything...

how do you bend cf pins? If you don't put it in properly, it doesn't seem to want to go in more than halfway... at least in my experience.

I've also experienced the 'ejector seat' with sd cards in my a540. None down a sewer drain though...

There have been a few threads here about bent pins. One as recently as a week ago.

I just had my XT repaired and it came back with an invoice that read "bent memory card pins", so the CF cards have a drawback, too. At least with the XT I don't have to worry about hitting an innocent bystander in the eye with an ejected card... why on earth would they put in a spring that strong to simply push out a memory card?

Sorry, but that made me laugh so hard I spit water all over my keyboard.

It sucks that you lost photos, but I've yet to come across an SD device that isn't spring-loaded so it shouldn't really come as a surprise that they can pop out if you're not careful. Also, regardless of what kind of cards you use, you should not be removing them from your camera or your bag if you are standing near a sewer drain. The same goes for lens caps, important medical prescriptions, and your car keys.

If you hit the CF eject on the 40D (or any of the other Rebels for that matter) you can get some launch to your CF card. Not sure how CF beats SD in this example. Tortise and hair story.

However, this post is very helpful in identifying this potential problem. I will definately step away from any sewer drains/etc when changing CF cards. I know I am always looking out to not park over a sewer drain because I have this fear of dropping my keys...

It's good that you've warned people. If you haven't used an SD card before, it can be a real surprise. I used to have SD on a P&S digital camera a few years back and it regularly flew out if I wasn't paying attention.

Count me in favor of CF cards!
