Does it work well to use these to together?

Used for what? If you don't have other people using flash, optical slaves work pretty well:

Simple "every-day-emergency" location lighting

well i want lighting for two main reasons...one being i have lots of trouble shooting people outside and indoors because of the lighting, and if im not fighting for light, i always get terrible shadows. another main reason is for shooting at our local music venue that is rather dark, and all the musicians are not very shootable except the singer.
As of now i use my 50 without of flash, because the on cam one drives me crazy.

It's tough when you have no control over the situation. When you do, start with "good light": Angeline outdoors

and all the musicians are not very shootable except the singer.

If other people are using flash, then optical slaves aren't a good choice. Maybe an extension cord & having someone else hold the strobe is the cheap answer. Otherwise you'll need the radio triggers.
