Strange thing about my ST-E2

I bought an st-e2 from a guy here locally but it came without instructions. I haven't been able to get it to work the way it should so I got on line with Canon and there is no manual available. Here is the strange thing...I accidentally got it to work with my camera on Manual. Both of my 580's off camera set on slave, one light set on A and the other on B. The 580's were set on ETTL. All my lights on the st-e2 were lit including the flash and ETTL lights. I tested all ratios from 8:1 to 1:8 and everything worked properly. I tested different f-stops and even added a third light (my 430) for the background set on B and that worked too but would not work on C, which makes sense. When I tried setting my camera to Program mode all I got was fill light from both cameras making my prop evenly lit no matter what ratio I set. Everything I've read or heard says you can't shoot on manual mode with an ST-E2. What do you think is happening? I would really like to get some information on this transmitter so if anyone knows how I can obtain it please let me know. Thanks for any info you can give:

Hang on.. what? You can shoot with your cam in manual mode with the ST-E2 - what you've read may be referring to manual mode on the flashes...

Try reading: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=192751 , too. PacAce describes how to fire your flashes in M mode with the ST-E2.

I read that, thanks. I saw that he set his flash heads to manual mode and was able to trigger the flash heads while his cam was set for manual with the ST-E2. My flash heads were still in ETTL mode and were set off with my camera set on manual. Same thing but different...or, different but same thing???

Cosworth: You are the bomb!!! Thanks for the manual. I couldn't find it even through Google. I guess I just didn't hit on the right link. Thank you:
