Ok, so, I was about to pull the trigger on a kenko 1.4x which I would use on my 70-200mm F/4... then I came across a 100-300mm F/5.6 for $475. Do you think I should buy the extender and keep the 70-200 or buy the 100-300? Is that a good price?
Forgot to mention the 100-300 is L

I think, that old EF 100-300/5.6L gives better IQ than 70-200/4 with 1.4 Extender. Remember, that Extender gives best results with primes, not with zooms. By the way, the price for 100-300 seems too high; I think, that it should be about $350.

Well, if a 100-300 sounds good, the Sigma 100-300/4 is a dynamite lens. Ok, a little more money but worth it.

I'll check it out. I have a feeling even when I get the extender I am going to want 'more' - now only if I can do this right and get paid to fund my hobby lol.

Gasrocks is on the money. Go for the sigma before either of those options.

I already own the 70-200 and waiting for the 1.4x to get here...
I'd like the 1.4 better on a 300 reach though :)
I just checked it out, it looks like a great lens...and looks like it might be one to save up for and sell the 70-200 - can you give me an idea of what a good 'used' price is?

Glad I didn't buy it at the price!

Hi, caroleigh - I thought that name rang a bell !
I'm Strider from that "other" group. I use the Sigma100-300mm f/4EX . It's a great lens , well worth the money. It's heavier then your 70-200mm lens. So you might want to think about a monopod to go with it

I have no idea what they sale for used.

I haven't Sigma 100-300/4, but use Tokina ATX 100-300/4, they are almost similar ( Sigma is optically better and better adjusted to digital, but more expensive). They are both big and heavy, it can be some trouble.

Thats where I worry. I have some problems with my arm and it sometimes hurts holding just the XTi and 70-200 F/4 . That's one of the reasons I am scared to move to a heavier camera as well. I need to be comfortable. I'm going to see if I can find a local place that maybe rents equipment.

If you can rent one, you should give it a try. Shooting at f/4 @ 300mm is worth the extra weight. I've had mine for some time now, and feel i'm just now getting the best out of it. Like I said . I use a monopod most of the time, saves my arms from getting tired and the images are sharper.

If their was a way you could have both, that would be nice. :D
It's nice to have a light lens also !
