Upgrading from a 30D to a 1D Mark III

I am looking for some advice. I have steadily moved up through the Canon digital cameras and am considering upgrading from my 30D to the 1D Mark III. Most of my photography is outdoors in a variety of not so friendly digital environments. I also use a sigma 50-500 lens and was curious if I would still be able to use it on the Mark III.

Is the upgrade worth it, or should I consider the 40D?

Any help would be appreciated.

The Sigma should work fine on the MkIII, but remember that your kit is only weather-sealed if you use a weather-sealed Canon lens with the MkIII.

If you've got the money to burn, the MkIII should be a wonderful upgrade. If you aren't going to make use of the outstanding (when working) autofocus and extremely good high-ISO noise handling of the camera, a 40D + some really good glass might suit you just as well (I don't know what your current lens lineup is). The 40D is a very good camera for the money. In many situations, a 40D with better glass will give you just as good or better shots than the MkIII with inferior glass.

I just got my Mk III yesterday and compared to a 30D it's in a totally different league. Once you handle it there's no going back. It's my first D so excuse my gushing!

@Studiom - That's normal -- you'll calm down once you see that your skills did not change. ;)

@OP - You have a very good question there. Since you have the money, rent both, see which you really prefer.

I moved from a 30D to a 1DMK3, you will love it :)

I also have the Bigma and it works great with the MK3 :)

All the best
