Great DOF calculator for Nokia S60 phones!

I was searching a way to figure out what Depth Of Field i am getting at a certain focal lenght, distance to subject and f-stop.

I've seen programs for this purpose for PC, Palm etc. But now i found one that is FREE and works with any Nokia S60v3 phones.

I installed it, and it's very easy to use ( in "easy" mode anyway ) and you can easily find out what is your area of sharpness in any given settings. It also has some graphics to help you out.

This is the best solution for people working "on the field" and in need for a DOF calculator and who own a Nokia cell phone

Bleh. I'd rather have a P&S over that. Phones are communication devices, not cameras.

I guess you missed the point? The Camera phone is not used for taking the actual image. The point is that you can install this software to your phone, and then use your phone as a DOF calculator.

Let's say youre taking a portrait with a 85mm lens, the subject is 2.8 meters from your camera, and your thinking what f-stop to use to get the DOF that you want. In this case, you might need about 30-40cm of DOF to get the entire subject sharp.

So, can u tell me what f-value will achieve the desired DOF? At f/1.8 ? or at f/2.8 or something smaller?

When you input these values in to the calculator ( the distance, and focal lenght ) you can see what the DOF is in any given f value.

My example values gives you a DOF of
2,73m-2,87m@f2
or
2,67m-2,95m@f/4
or
2,62m - 3,01m@5.6

And from this you can see right away that f/2 is out of the question because the sharpness area would only be 14cm.
If you use a smaller aperture like f/4 your sharpness area will increase to almost 30cm.

To me, this is very useful information. Because i can't calculate these three factors in my head..

p.s. No i don't mean that you should use your camera phone for taking the images, i prefer my 40D's image quality

It's really quite interesting that if you're 3 meters from your subject and using let's say 55mm and f/2.8 your image is sharp from 2.75m to 3.3m. So not much DOF at those settings, BUT
if you adjust your focal length to 30mm your DOF will increase to 2.3m - 4.32m

When shooting groups etc. the difference in just the focal lenght can separate a disaster from a total success Good to know i think..

The DOF calculator for a cell phone camera is simpler. Everything is in focus.....but not all that sharp anyway.:p

I also have DoFCalc, but haven't used it yet. Nothing in the info. I got both from Android Marketplace.

Oh, does the phone have a built in tape measure as well? So I can figure out how far away I am from the subject? Or do I have to buy the software for that?
