I'm finally picking up the new cam next week and need some advice. I'm not really sure I'll even grab the kit but if I do which lens would you chose?

Depending on budget I would say one of these:

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

I haven't see any kits with the new 18-55 model. I haven't seen any comparisons with the two kits lenses and the old 18-55 either. Most reviews are iffy about the kits lenses but if they're better than the old 18-55's that's not really a bad deal. With the kit it's cheaper plus the rebate brings it down another hundred.

The IS version of the kit lens gets raving reviews. In fact every review puts its IQ above the 17-85. e.g. http://www.photozone.de …56-is-test-report--review (external link)

If you do not have plans to go to a 5D (Or higher) body anytime soon I would go with the 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens.

Canon gear - 7D, 50mm f/1.8 II, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 15-85mm IS, Nissin Di866 flash.

Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX Macro
Simga 30 1.4
Canon 17-55 2.8IS

I had the 17-85, was unimpressed after twelve months, sold for a 24-70. 24mm isn't wide enough if it's your main lens... the 17-55 IS looks pretty darned good.

Looking at the list of lenses you already have, I would just get the body.

But if you plan to sell some of your lenses, which too many overlaps- I would go for the longer zoom.

Regards.

I've been shooting my 40D with my lenses and have really been impressed with the results....see gear list.

When I ordered my 40D about a month ago, I debated getting the 28-135...not a bad lens mind you but nothing impressive.

I had a pretty good idea that the 28-135 would not show off what my 40D was capable of. I say that from owning and using for a couple of years(and sold) the 28-135 .

The 40D just shines with better glass.

Begging the forum's pardon(since many have seen these before), here are two examples of what I'm talking about.

Hey this is a photography forum right? And a picture is worth a thousand words...right? :D

The 40D with the 70-200, the pelican(cropped at about 50%) and the 40D with the 24-105, no flash, bad lighting situation...the motorcycle.

And, there are tons more pictures out there...much better examples than my poor efforts showing how well the 40D does with good glass.

I know the kit lens is a good buy as a kit....but if it ends up sitting on your shelf because better glass flatters the 40D...why get it?

Best of luck.

:)

whenever people see 'kit lens' they instantly think it's the 18-55...i'd recommend the 28-135...but if your looking for a wider angle...it probably wouldn't work...i find my 28-135 seems to be a good walk around type lens..

Don't get a kit lens.
I am a total newbie to dSLR. I bought my 40D with a 28-135 kit lens in Jan. before discovering this forum. I have just replaced the kit lens with an EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS. (and then some :D) after reading all the posts and stickies on lenses.

I still need to test the new lenses I bought....and the camera. :p

Thanks guys. I'm leaning heavily on body only but the urge to get the kit and resell the lens is an option too. The first lens I'm buying after is the 50 1.4 or 1.8 depending on deals. My Tokina and Fifty can handle my street and landscape until I grab a 17-40L. The Tamron will go on CL as soon as I get a 70-200 and a decent TC.

The 17-55 is tempting for street though....

Slow,

You will hear all kinds of I bought the 28 - 135 for $200 and sold it for twice that....threads......be careful there. I've had one of those lenses....they don't sell for that much...new or used.

Put one good lens on your 40D and you will be a happy camper.....

And...you don't have to buy and sell the 28-135(make a few extra $$$ to justify it) kind of folks.

Want to have fun with your 40D? Want to be the happiest person on the planet that you bought that camera?

Buy a good lens to go with it. A short time from now you will have forgotten what you paid for a good lens......

But you will be reminded every day how great your 40D is....good lens added. :D

for the $190 price difference...it seems that it would be easy to sell it for over $300...and if not...you must've done something wrong
