I've had this camera for almost two years with no problem downloading pics from camera to computer. Suddenly, I'm getting this message: Cannot detect camera. Check connection, then retry. I've checked everything...fresh batteries, USB ports are all working, bought new USB cord, even downloaded the camera software to another computer and tried to download the pics and still the same message. I "think" I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver software on our main computer. The message remains the same. At this point I'm thinking there's something wrong with the camera. Can anyone offer any insights? I'm getting ready to pull out the old SLR!!! :(borbs

How about buying a card reader?
I have always used a card reader. I'd rather buy another cheap card reader than get my camera fixed if there is a problem like the one you are describing.

PC or Mac? If you connect the camera without starting Canon's software, does the computer recognize that you've connected it? I'd also suggest that you go with a card reader. It's generally easier and faster.

Both computers are PC's. The computer doesn't recognize the camera. Previously, I'd turn on the camera, wait for a couple of seconds and the Canon program would start up. Now, nothing happens.

Trying not to overlook the obvious . . . you do have the camera in "Review" mode?

If you open Device Manager and examine the USB Hub entries, does the camera show up listed on any of the USB Hub "Power" tabs? Does an "Unknown device" show up on any of them where the camera should be?

Correct me if I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time, but hey), this reminds me of a similar question asked recently and it turned out that the Canon software had never been downloaded . . .

Yes, I have the camera in review mode...as in the mode switch is changed to playback. As for the software, I've installed and re-installed the software a couple of times. As I mentioned earlier, a week ago I could download pictures without any problem. Then, suddenly, the computer couldn't detect the camera.

Another thought (trying to cover all the bases) - check for software updates for your particular camera on the Canon website.

I would also suggest a card reader.

Can you also check/look into the usb port on the camera itself? And see if any of the 4 pins are bent or not?

Goodluck.
