The birds are letting me get closer to them now. This Blue Jay stayed on the ground for about 5 seconds. They do not stay around long.

Nice shot Chip, and my favorite bird. The word is Peanuts. Put out some unsalted in the shell peanuts and they will be regular visitors. During all year but in the breeding season, I have about a dozen blue jays that visit daily for their peanuts. Some are more skittish than others, but if the peanuts are there and so are you, sitting quietly, then they will eventually get use to you and come down for them. They also like whole kernel corn. :)

Thanks Mitch, I appreciate your reply. I have two regulars. One thing that I find interesting is that I have a Red Bellied Woodpecker that hangs around with the two Jays. They are always together.

That doesn't surprise me. At our local wetlands, we have some fairly tame birds at a feeding station. The jays and a couple of red bellys always seem to show up together, and they both love peanuts. :)
