Hi All,
As a recent Canon convert to Canon Digital, where I bought a s/h 1D mk2,I am curious to know what lenses fit.
I am aware of the longer lenses ,L series ,and EOS lenses, but wanted to buy some older primes .
My old film FD lenses dont fit ,which is a real shame as they were superb, and no adaptors are available ? True, untrue ?
At the moment I only have a 35-350 L,and an old EOS short zoom.28-70 f3.5-4-5
Am I restricted to EOS onwards ?

Any advice would be very welcome ,
Many thanks,
Pons

You can only use Canon EF-mount lenses (or third-party equivalents) without adapters. EF-S lenses will NOT work.

As to using older lenses with adapters - if the lens mount surface to film surface distance of the original camera for the "older lens" is more than a couple of millimeters shorter than the Canon EOS design, using them should be easy. An example is the Nikkor (Nikon) lenses.

When the lens mount to film distance is longer than the EOS design (such as with the Canons using FD lenses), the best you can do is an adaptor that has optics in it and actually acts as a teleconverter, multiplying the focal length of the lens.

Everything but EF-S lenses will fit. They do make adaptors for fd, but they are expensive and hard to come by. Some say the quality is not that great too....

To buy a fairly new, modern, high performance digital camera and then use old FD lenses on it doesn't make any real sense to me. No autofocus, no automatic aperture.
Besides, some of these FD lenses we all thought were so good (I have a bag full of them myself) were used on film. Digital, with the ability of going into pixel detail, reveals a lot more of the faults of the old lenses. So they may not be that terrific as you thought.

I did just check one of the Nikon fit lenses,a 200-500 Tammie ,and the fitting is way smaller on the Nikon on diameter .

You can even use Contax and Olympus manual lens with an adapter .
No auto focus but you can get focus. confirmation.

You can also use them on the Efs series cameras. My Olympus lenses work fine.
