Was told this was a new release young Condor. He did not fly while I was there. Taken looking down from Navajo Bridge on the Colorado River south of Page, AZ. I think he was trying to figure out what I was doing with the 100-400.

Poor thing. Probably wondering when they deliver lunch. He doesn't look too healthy.

There were supposed to be 6 or 7 around that area. Maybe it needed a companion. I think they have a reasonable success rate. Hope it makes it. Did see him fly before I had the telephoto on.

I'd like to know more about them and how they raise them. It wouldn't be very fair to feed them nice red meat and turn them loose to fend on old nasty rotten stuff. :)

Mitch,
Got a card that has the web site www.peregrine.org (external link) that has more info on the Condor. 22 Condor's in 1982. Now 0ver 200 about 1/4 in Arizona. Or so the pamphlet says. Someone in that area keeps track of them with radio equipment. He was not there to talk to at the time.

We have a member here that works on the Rim, and knows a lot about these birds. Maybe he'll fill us in. :)

Nice shot of C6, this bird has been here for some time. It's a young bird, I don't have my list handy so can't give you all the info. I have photos of this one on the south rim near the bright angel. About 80 birds here in the park now, and they do put out deer carcuses every few days to help them out. Later in the season these guys hang out a lot up north of the canyon feeding on dead sheep on ranch lands. If there's a fire, they take advantage after it's past to feed on any animals that died in the fire zone. Mitch this bird is healthy, it's just hunkered down and resting. Looks kind of fat to me!
