I took this yesterday of my son and husband at a go-card place. It's slightly OOF. I used Av to allow the shutter speed to go higher (I often mis-judge and set it too low). I assume I set the aperture at 6.3 (bizarre) to open it as much as possible to allow the shutter speed to be faster. Probably why I set my ISO at 200, not 100.

Here's the pic and exif. I'm not used to doing high-speed stuff, so any advice would be appreciated.

EXIF:

Av (aperture priority)
shutter speed: 1/400 (seems low?)
aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 200
focal length: 50mm
AI Servo, "H" fps

Which lens? Some lens are slow to focus and give more OOF shot. But this shot looks ok to me.

Probably not, as the back of the cart seems sharper than the front. Still, I'd have used ISO 400 & gone for f/8 & 1/500. Maybe even a touch higher as the whites look a bit blown out.

It looks OK to me, but I would've bumped the ISO to 400 and used a faster shutter speed.

Looks OK to me as well.
Are you talking about the area around the front wheel being OOF?
If so, I think that's just motion blur.

ISO 400 would have given you double the shutter speed and at 1/800 you probably would have eliminated motion blur...I think.:D

The 50L is tight for focus, I would have tried a faster speed and f11. But I don't think you had enough time to do much if the cart was going fast.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I'd say your sharpest shot would definitely require a substantially higher shutter speed combined with a stopped down aperture. I wouldn't hesitate to up Your ISO to at least 800 to get a shutter speed of 1000 or so and get a narrower aperture as well. Moving subject can be a beast!

But, the alternate approach, suggested by Pio, is to use panning to capture the moving cart rather than the shutter speed. This is a learned skill that comes with practice, but can make a moving object shot more interesting: using a somewhat slow shutter speed but following the object closesly using AI Servo, keeping the focus on one spot of the opbject and firing a few clicks as it goes by -- you hope to get shots where the object is in focus but the foreground and bckground are blurred by the motion of your camera. It looks very cool when you get it right -- stuff in the background/foreground are less distracting. Plus, you can use a narrow enough aperture to ensure that the cart is more fully in focus!

I would have used the 85 1.8 if I was thinking about it. But you only have the 50 1.2, well, you've got to use it. The carts may not go very fast, but I bet chimping and trying to work on the exposure would take too long.

The hubby said they likely were going around 20 to 25 mph. And they went around quite a few times. I was using AI Servo and probably "tried" to pan a few times without good results. ;)
