i just got a job to do photographic documentation of an old water tower. the company that hired me wants to tear it down and because it is eligible for listing on the national register of historic places, they have to make a photographic permanent archival record.

has anyone done this type of work before?

No I haven't, but a lot depends on how they define "permanent"? Do they mean paper, optical, magnetic or some other media?

It could be argued that nothing is "permanent"!

it says that all documentation must be "printed on archivally stable paper." "images should be saved to a media that is designed for long-term (over 100 years) storage of sensitive data, video, or music files"

I think the archival paper just means low acid paper so that it will keep the prints longer. The best answer if they are looking for digital storage is to keep it on some kind of drive, or remote server that gets recopied at a regular interval.

Always happy to hear some critique

interesting job.

Im more interested in how they want you to photographic it?

I assume a few distant and landscape shots.
Couple upclose shots.
Few key feature shots.

Do they want you to roll around with a macro lens and capture every nook and cranny of it? I mean, its possible to create a vitural 3d water tower via detailed macro photography. Now thats what I would call "permanent archival record "
