I corrected a 3-year-old cousin's child "My name is Bill, not Bob." Well, she over-corrected and called me Billy Bob. That was nearly 20 years ago and now half the family calls me that. Jeeze Louise.

Your 3 year old cousin had a child?? That's impressive even for a Southerner. ;)

my name is Claude and I get called Clark a lot. It doesn't really bother me much, as I don't really care about the ones that can't get it right anyway.
And for those that I really don't want to care about, I just tell them my name is George or something, so if they ask for me, no one will point them out to me.;)

Heh, good topic. I'm not sure what's worse, a really unusual name, or a variation on a spelling of a common name. My name would be the latter case.

My first name is Lisabeth. Looks like "Lisa" + "beth", but is prounounced like "Elizabeth" without the initial "E." Of course, it is spelled wrong more often than not. I could understand if people spelled it just like the traditional version, but it seems that people are always coming up with new and weird ways to spell it. In college I decided to start going by "Liz" to simplify things. People even get that wrong, spelling it "Lis." Whenever I use my credit card or driver license (which have the full spelling), I often get comments and questions about it. Oh well, makes life interesting!

My name, my Moms name, and our last name.

My name? Nicolaus Pro. Not Nickolus or however else you spell it, N-I-C-O-L-A-U-S
Moms name? Bogna. Not bugna, no boogna, B-O-G-N-A
Last name? Pro. Not por or poor. P-R-O

Yeah, but that was 20 years ago, making her 23 now, so it's OK for her to have that child now. :|

So, what do you do about the people who have been looking for George and end up with you?

Shouldn't that be over in the time travel/message thread? :p

Name's Ilse, funny how most people only spell one letter in my name right... L!
I've had Elza, Ielse, Ilza, Elsa (had a dog named Elsa....). But the WORST is Hilda.
I'll answer the phone "Ilse, hello!"
They'll ask "Hilda?"
"No, Ilse"
"Hilda??"
"I-L-S-E..."
"H-I-L-D-A...."
urgh...why not, right?

Ok, we had a re-org at work, now people think I am Scott.

So, I am now STAM, or SCAM.

Take your pick.

Ok, I've noticed over the years that my name should have been STEVE.

For some strange reason, the absolute most common mistake is for someone to call me that.

Happens in person, at conferences, and, now, in mass e-mails.

So, now, I proclaim myself 'Stam' - the combination of Steve + Sam.

Wow. That's weird. My first name is "Cameron" and I'm a female. I have had a hate-hate relationship with my name since childhood. No one seems to get that I'm not a guy! Truly irks me. Then I mention Cameron Diaz and they're like... oh, yeah... So either I'm a man, or up against some stunning blonde chick who's about a million times more beautiful than I'll ever be!

I've been Al since I went to uni. I always introduce myself as that and everyone except my mum calls me that. What really irks me is when people presume to know what the full version is and call me Alan..... which it's not ;)

I think people say/spell my last name as Aldridge, Aldredge, Arledge, and Aldrick more often than they get it right. And a lot of people call me Justin (my brother's name).

start a collection, a montage of all the incorrect spellings. My wife has 10 letters in her name, she must have a collection encompassing at least 200 different combinations of just those ten, maybe 200 more with extras. Makes it a little more fun to be insulted by the insurance guy at your birthday and your doctors secretary when its that time again.
