I get this a fair bit also. My surname is Carlill, not Carlisle, Carhill or any of the other variants. I shrug it off, except for the one time at a function waiting for a name tag to be written out I had the staff member tell me I was spelling my name wrong and wouldn't accept the spelling I was telling her.

Don't you just love it?!! Can you spell "chutzpah"?

It happens to me all the time. But I can assure you that no single idiot ever does it twice!

My last name is Berg. People usually get it wrong in one of two ways -- Burg or Burke (this excludes the people who call my by my wife's last name, an entirely different story). Usually, it's not an issue.

Earlier this week I had to testify before a State Senate Committee on Education. We also needed to have a student testify, but her parents were not able to transport her. Her parents know me through my community activism and we have many common friends, so I arranged to bring the student to the capitol with me.

The group who was coordinating our testimony sent some school administrators a note to let them know that I'd be bringing her to the hearing, but they got my name wrong in the note. I didn't find out until after, but apparently there were a lot of very worried school administrators who thought that a complete stranger was going to be transporting and taking care of a seventh grade girl.

If it's the city southeast of Tacoma, isn't it pronounced pyoo-al-ep?

my last name gets it all the time.

its Daly, but said like daily/dailey... but most say it as Dal-E

So you blame anyone? A good lookin girl being called Doll?;)

My name is Greg.....Not Gregory

And my last name is Mikkelson. I get call Mike also. The pronounce it?

It is not McElson.

My Great Grand father came over from Norway with his two brothers. In order to get into the country you had to have two dollars then. When you got off the boat you walked up one side of the fence and went thru the gate with your two dollars and then back to the registrar. My GGF walked thru and handed the two bucks to his brother, and so he did the same.

The ppl at eles island spelled thier names different. Michealson, and Mickelson.

Greg

Pretty much -- maybe more of an "up" than an "ep" at the end. It's a dead giveaway for when a company around here uses an out of state answering service. The operators try to get it right and virtually never succeed.

I would pronounce the "up" or "ep" or whatever at the end as an unstressed syllable with a neutral vowel sound, where a dictionary would use a schwa in the pronunciation guide. I just don't have a convenient schwa on my keyboard.

But hey! At least I'm in the right ballpark!

People often confuse my last name with my first when reading it off documents....

But with the last name of "Horton", you're first name should be "Tim".....
