Hello. I'm new here and I'd like to thank the moderators and participants for this forum.

I searched but I didn't find any information on how to program the A720 IS to save photos (files) using the date as the file name. I was able to do this on my Nokia phone and it was very convenient!

Does anybody know if this is possible on the A720, and if so, could you (would you?) refer me to a site or section of the user's manual that explains how to do it?

I read the user's manual but it does not seem to be in there.

It won't be the end of the world if I can't do this, but it sure was a nice feature of the phone camera, and I guess I just assumed that it was a normal feature.

Again, thanks in advance.

Not in the camera. However, if you think about it you're more likely to take multiple shots on the same day, and a date (even with only 2 digits for the year) doesn't give you an awful lot of room for distinctions between photos on that date. Most download programs (including Canon's Zoom Browser) will let you set up a separate directory for each date when you download. And after all, it's once it gets on the computer that you start getting busy.

Hi Jon. Thanks so much for answering.

Nokia solved the multiple-pictures-in-one-day problem by naming files as follows:

23.10.2007
23.10.2007-1
23.10.2007-2

Etc. I just thought that was the greatest idea since sliced bread. But I guess Canon has a limit on file name length.

I will definitely be following your advice on the directories, though. Thank you again for taking the time to explain that.

Well, Canon follows an industry standard for photo naming, and that's based around the universally readable 8.3 names used on FAT directory structures.

You can use a program like http://www.snapfiles.com/get/stamp.html (external link) and it will use the EXIF data to sort the pictures as well as rename them to include the date. I think it's exactly what you're looking for if you have a PC.

Stamp lets you rename your digital camera photos so they sort in chronological order. It uses the EXIF metadata that is contained in digital photos and renames the files, using the date information as the name, in addition to incremental numbers as well as optional batch information and sequence numbers. Since the program sets the date information as first part of the file name, they can be easily sorted in Windows Explorer, using the true creation date. Stamp can also maintain the original file name and include it as part of the new name, and download images directly from your camera.
