We had a real tragedy today in San Diego, a swimmer was killed by a Great White shark just a few blocks down from my work in Encinitas. Witnesses estimated the shark to be 14-16' in length, just a huge shark.
The news did a profile on the man who was killed, seemed like a really nice guy, very sad. I dropped by Fletcher Cove after work to see what was happening there, and to play the paparazzi role, lots of media still were still there.
RIP.

I heard about it while driving to school. Very sad. The man who died was actually training for a competition. The shark left marks indicating it was a huge thing. Must find it or else a lot of people may get hurt or killed. Great coverage on your part.

You say this like it was the shark's fault? It's their domain..we just visit and hope to not get eaten.

I'm not up for arguing, just saying I don't think anyone wants to see another incident. If catching it is the right thing to do?

haha, i wouldn't push that line of thought to far - why do we humans try to minimize the amount of malaria carrying mesquitos who breed in naturally occuring ponds near your home, school, workplace, etc... :-)

anyway if this guy was training for some kind of competition he was probably more respectful of and friendly to the sea (ocean) than most people... its sad for his family most of all.

I agree that it's sad for the family but news reports pointed out that there had been sea lions sighted in the area which is very unusual. Sharks prey on Sea Lions. People in wetsuits look like Sea Lions...

It's not that I think a rogue shark shouldn't be dealt with if there are attacks on humans but it's quite possible this shark was just following food.

As for the mosquito thing, dunno, I live in the desert...

Must find it....

Or just leave it alone.

The man was swimming at 7am. I know sharks. I don't swim in any salt water when the sun is near the horizon.

The man was a risk taker or uneducated about wildlife in his area. No need to kill an endangered species that was feeding in it's own habitat.

To be honest, I'm surprised at how many people think the shark should be destroyed. I remember when that tiger in some California zoo killed that guy and everybody was saying the tiger should be spared. What's the difference? Yes, its sad, but the shark was just being a shark. That's what they do.

I think you have watched "Jaws"one time too many. There is no rouge shark out there attacking people and which "must be stopped". This was a case of mistaken identity (as with most shark attacks). If the shark were hunting humans, there would be nothing left of the victim. This is an area where seals are common and are therefore hunted by sharks. Guess what a swimmer looks like from below... The shark bit the man, realized it wasn't what it was hunting and moved on. Unfortunately, the man did not survive the incident.

When people die in automobile accidents, we do not attempt to rid the highways of drivers, do we?

Well technically I don't think that the great white is an endangered species, but I agree leave the shark alone.

WTF... So kill hundreds, thousands, maybe more just to get a shark? Thats like taking out the entire city on San Diego so solve the crime problem. Makes no sense.

I don't think you can compare a random shark attack with the lion attack at the zoo. You can't believe everything on the news. But it was reported many times that the boys involved in the tiger attack were taunting the tiger and were said to be at least partially inside the tigers habitat.

It was equally sad as the swimmer but they are entirely different situations. One may have been caused by lack of awareness the other is caused by complete stupidity and lack of respect.
