Oh no! Now what??

As I can see you already own zoom lenses which cover the mid focal lengths. If I were you I would buy the prime one in no time. It is sharper and the AF system also faster. I would recommend the 100-400mm ONLY to those who want only one lens to cover the whole focal length range.
Here is a sample of my 400mm f/5.6 L "African experience".

You can check out sharpness and fast focus ability in action shots by yourself! Greetings from Greece

Thanks, Matman!
That's been my thinking, too. However, I had been holding off to see if an IS version of the lens was going to be coming out.....since everyone was out of stock for a while. I don't "need" the lens until the fall, so I was in a position to wait. Now, I may go ahead and get the 400 for the reasons you stated....and because I already have a 75-300 zoom (which I end up shooting at 300 most of the time anyways).
I find it interesting....someone from a well known retailer had told me they had heard there was a new version of this lens coming out. So, I'm surprised that there is no IS version now--perhaps it's still coming?! (Maybe I won't need IS....I'm getting a new tripod!)

One thing you may not have considered is that unless you're shooting with a 1 series camera you won't have AF with the 400 f/5.6 when using a teleconverter (without taping the pins). However if you get a 300 f/4 IS or non IS and you attach a 1.4x TC you still have AF and your focal length is 420mm. So you get the same aperture with a higher FL.

I've used both these lenses and the 400 is very sharp but the 300 + 1.4x TC is pretty darn close.

Funny, my local retailer tells me the 400/5.6 L went out of active production in 2004. I'm guessing there are only very few people who buy this excellent lens and now the stock is slowly comming to an end.

Well, I've just picked a new copy from T4 Cameras in Swindon UK. It took about a week for it to arrive from Canon UK.

A german photo dealer wrights

"

My german is not so good

A Babelfish translation

"This objective is hardly production was already some time ago adjusted still again available there. Very unfortunaty, since it connects a small weight with brilliant imaging capacity - and at an unbeatable price. This concerns new commodity original of Canon Germany!"

Well, I guess I do not have to start a rumour, but I was going to buy one, until I noticed that stock is rare all over and it got me thinking that a new version would be released and the original discontinued. Locally, I have been told that there is no stock at the Canon warehouse.

The present design is 15 yrs old I believe, I'm guessing that an IS version will be released, it only makes sense. I don't want to buy an existing design only to see it be devalued if a new version comes out, so I am still pulling my hair out deciding on an older manual focus nikkor to tide me over until a new version is released and the price settles down.

If you want this lens don't wait for the "IS" version which after all is only a rumor and nothing more...buy it now.
This lens doesn't need the IS feature. It is lightweight and most of the time used either on a monopod, tripod or with a beanbag by wildlife photographers in safari vehicles which means that sharp images are easily taken.
Don't waste your time waiting for a....rumor to become reality. This lens is a true gem and probably the only affordable Canon super-telephoto;)

I don't think Canon is likely to discontinue this lens anytime soon. I went out to shop my copy of 400mm F5.6 this morning and copies I saw all have code either in UV or UW. My copy is UW02xx, which is February 2008 I believe.

Personally, I was also put off initially by the rumor, but I looked at my needs and realized that I don't really need IS and 3.5m MFD isn't really an issue for me. So now I am a happy 400mm F5.6 owner:lol:

I been looking for this lens too.

It maybe out of stock (at least in the US) is maybe the football season is coming up??? Perhaps parents and freelancers that can't afford the higher priced 400 are buying them??

I ordered my on May 16th from Amazon and It shipped on June 19th. I didnt really need the lens but wanted to get it before the price increase. I still have not used yet as I'm on the East Coast while I had it shipped to my home in CA. It will be great when I arrive home because I will be going straight into Surfing contests.
