I know it's crazy to think that anyone would look for infomration other than here on POTN. I know, I know. But I was wondering if anyone subscribes or reads any photogprahy magazines regularly? There seem to be a lot of them out there but most seem to be broad or generic in topic, or, they are full of nothing but advertisements. Just curious.

Tip one: Don't buy US Magazines. They are just that, full of ads and poor info. The one Magazine that I have found that I think is what a photography magazine should be is Digital Camera World. It is plenty thick and has actual useful information cool tricks of the trade actual lessons and ongoing contests. Each issue comes with a fee gift, for example, one issue came with an 18% grey exposure card. Also each issue comes with a CD with specific Photoshop how-to's. It is printed in England, so its $14.99 per issue, but I would rather pay that than pay $5.00 for a magazine full of ads and crap.

I ended up with a 1-year Popular Photography for $5 total. I can't find the link again, but there are deals like that floating around. I can't speak for the accuracy of the content, but I do enjoy flipping through it when I have time, just to keep up with the new gear and get some shooting tips/ideas.

I always buy "Practical Photography", the UK mag. Minimal ads and lots of info and examples.

I agree, the best photo mags come from across the great pond.

I read Outdoor Photographer and Nature Photographer regularly. While they do have a lot of advertising (esp OP) they also have very interesting and informative articles, and some incredible images.

If you're looking for good photos, well printed, try Lenswork or Camera Arts.

Neither does equipment reviews or have how to articles.

I want to have a subscription as well! I regularly buy either the Practical Photography magazine or the Digital Camera World magazine. But I can´t decide on which one to subscribe to...

Digital Camera World seems a little more advanced than Practical P. and comes with a CD too...

I go for Practical Photography although it does tend to be biased to Nikon but I live in the UK anyway. Here it costs £3.70 don't know what you would pay for it over your side of the pond. The other thing with buying UK mag's is realising how fortunate you are living across the pond as far as prices for equipment goes

Regarding these mags from England: do you buy them in US at a newstand/book store, or do you subscribe direct?
I would imagine the shipping on a subscription makes them cost same or more than the retail price at a Barnes & noble for example.

I buy them from a bookstore, just because its easier to come up with $15.00 a month than the $175 US dollars for a subscription.

My list:
Rangefinder - Printed very nicely, great big pictures and articles
Outdoor Photographer - Good for nature/outdoor photogs
American Photo Magazine - Kinda all around

All of those have a fair amount of ads, BUT I get American Photo and Rangefinder for free through offers I signed up for, and outdoor photographer I get as a gift (plus it is fairly cheap).

Check out this forum for free magazine signups (great for getting those mags that you dont want to pay for cause they are filled with ads...but they still have some good articles):

I have signed up for a few through mercury mags and never had an issue with other spam mail.

I really like JPG magazine. You can see the community on jpgmag.com and the entire thing is user submitted artwork. They have some interesting ideas, but a lot of it seems to be similarly styled, and everything is going for more of an artistic look. You can also download a full issue to see if you like it. They haven't chosen any of my images yet, but I will keep trying.
They average about 3 ads per issue, and there is a small how-to section, but its often film focused.

Always happy to hear some critique

I get Outdoor Photography now and EOS Magazine from the UK. I like to see the reviews and see what others are shooting outdoors, but the EOS Magazine is expensive. Just love all the information, though.
