Hi there. I really don't think that what you have is a flower, per se, but a bud where future stems and leaves was coming from. You may want to try the many sites offered by the Missouri Department of Conservation and affiliated groups. http://www.missouriplants.com/index.html (external link)
http://www.missouriwildflowerguide.com/ (external link)
http://www.mdc.mo.gov/nathis/plantpage/ (external link)

I've asked several people at the MDC about identifications, and they are always happy to send you to the right place. We are truly blessed to be living in a state that is so active in trying to educate the public about conservation, flora, and fauna of Missouri. You also can get the Missouri Conservationist for free if you have a Missouri address. Great monthly magazine!! http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov …ations/conmag/conmag.aspx (external link)

I'm not positive, but could it be an Ohio Buckeye bud? I looked through my "Shrubs and Woody Vines of Missouri" and then online, and I wonder if this could be it? http://www.flickr.com/photos/jklsemi/129111204/ (external link)
http://www.flickr.com …129110815/in/photostream/ (external link)

I would love to see what it looked like once it was totally unfurled. I guess another question would be is how big was it? That could be a clue as well. http://www.flickr.com/photos/maren6300/470807758/ (external link)

Maybe this will get you on the right track!!
