Which lens do you think is better for a wedding photography?

Canon 85mm L f1.2 with 1.4 extender

or

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L

I have 85mm f1.2L and 24-105mm f4 but i need a good telephoto lens which would be good in dim light so it could compensate my 24-105mm which is at f4.

I'm thinking whether to buy a 1.4 extender and try to make my 85mm sort of a telephoto lens ( i have a 5D body).
Or just buy a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L.

The only problem with buying 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L is that i was saving my money for the new 5d mark II which i don't know when it would be coming out..

So what are your suggestions?

Thanks,

I'd spend the money on a sure thing, the 70-200 2.8. Buy that lens now and it'll fill in the gap you're looking for. The 5D is a very capable camera and who knows when the mark II will be released.

70-200 f/2.8 IS would be the choice.

For weddings a zoom lens will always be more versatile.
So +1 for the 70-200 F2.8 IS

I would say 70-200F2.8 IS too. The issue with 85L is its slow AF. Even without 1.4x, it is considered slow. It will be even slower with the 1.4x. With its extreme shallow DOF, it is not a very good choice for for photojournalistic type of shooting, at least from my experience. I much prefer the 85F1.8 if I need to "capture the moment".

I doubt the 85L would take a TC very well.

Have you done a wedding before? Doesn't sound like it. 85/1.2 is great for posed shots but, as mentioned, hard for anything spontaneous. No, don't consider a TC. What other lenses do you have now? A 70-200/2.8 IS might be a good choice.

85L will only take a third-party teleconverter, and it doesn't do very well with a tcon. So, rather get the 70-200.

Regarding the 5D II, it looks like it will be announced at the Photokina now, probably with delivery early December I would think, and another 6 months or so to have the bugs ironed out, which all in all will give you about a year to save for it from now. Therefore I'd suggest you'd buy what you need rigth now, and start saving with a view to buy the 5D II in a year's time or so :).

Kind regards, Wim

You've had the 85 like one week and you've shot how many weddings with it to make this judgment?
