You guys inspired me. I'm gonna go shoot some nightclubs and see how it works out.

Right now I have 85mm 1.8 and 28-136mm 3.5-5.6 , both of which blow for that type of thing. I'm deciding either between the 17-40 4L or 24-70 2.8L... and I'm leaning towards saving for the 24-70L because it's a good walkaround lens anyways. I'm thinking 24 on a 1.6x would still be wide enough for club shots... yes?

Hopefully soon I can post some pics. Keep em coming!

it depends on how crowded the place is. but i've found that the 24-70 is too long for me. i use a 30d. the 17-40 was good. i've been renting my lenses. the 16-35 was perfect. i found the 24-70 good when the place was like a lounge and even then at 24 most of the time it was too long.

if you're going to BUY a lens, i cant advise you because i know nothing about the difference between a 17-40 or a 24-70. but if we're talking for club situations i would go with the 17-40. on a 1.6 crop most definitely.

i find lenses like the 85 1.8 to be great for those creative photos. like shutting off the flash and shooting at 1.8. crowd shots. the d.j. shooting people across the room etc. but once im in a club i rarely switch lenses its just too crowded and i have my bag stored away somewhere till the end.

if possible, try to get your hands on a 24-70 and use it at a club to see if it works for you. it doesnt for me. outside teh club 24-70 is as perfect as the come. great lens

a little bit of this, a little bit of that

24 is not wide enough for crowd shots. 17-40 is a tad slow. Consider the 17-55 or 10-22.

Ive noticed that. One problem I have with the 24-70. I would really like to get my hands on the 16-35 but not too sure how well it would work. Should be just as good as the 17-55 although not as long.

Mk I is soft. Mk II is a waste on a cropped IMHO. More expensive than the 17-55, but you lose 3 stop IS AND 20mm at the long end.

If you have a 5D then the 16-35 II would be fantastic. In fact that is what I plan to get if I get the 5D II eventually.

I'd say that 10mm on a cropped is possibly a bit too narrow for crowd shots (well rectilinear 10mm anyway)... hence the order of a 10-17mm Tokina fisheye.

on a side note - no such thing as a need for a fast lens for nightclub stuff (unless it's ambient stuff) :p

10mm narrow!!?

In theory you don't even need an SLR. What it comes down to is the style and level of work you are to produce. Our top photographer Marc shoots almost exclusively using fast primes. If he hears you say such blasphemy he would shoot you with his 85mm 1.2L ;)

The last couple are from his all expenses paid trip to take photos for Space in Ibiza. You might even have seen some of his work on the those massive billboards around the island.

In a nutshell, don't neglect DOF and ambient light for club shots. Background exposure using ambient light almost always yields more pleasing results than background lit by diffused flash.

I have a question for the people posting pictures here... are you affiliated with the clubs in any way, or are you just showing up to them to take shots? And what are generally your methods of getting the shots? Do you ask, or do people generally see the camera and strike a pose?

Usually hired by either the promotion of the evening or the venue itself. Be confident and you can get away with almost anything. Most people see you point at them strike a pose, and the ladies love it and it sometimes turns into a bit of a miniature shoot. Other times you rather let the dancers strutt their thing and just fire away without interrupting them.

u guys have some top shots!

i currently take a few shots at clubs for my brother who DJs and also for ppl who run the nights. I am still in the process of getting a 580EX flash, but in the meantime and also for wen i have my flash. Wat am i needing to do to get such still shots when not using the flash?

I currently jack the ISO to about 1000 but i still hav to use a slower shutter speed, coz alot of the clubs are very dark. people are constantly moving, including the DJ, so u get the motion effect, which is good for a few shots, but how do i get a good sharp image of even the crowd without a flash?

thanks in advance :)

ya har. although MOS is particularly wide. hence the Tokina fisheye... 10mm on that is actually about 9.4mm or something where as 10mm rectilinear is nearer 10mm...

any examples dude? love to see some stuff from non SLR... I've tried... and mostly failed on my compact.

good for him... why is everyone else on this thread using wide aps and not producing this level of work? just a general question rather than arguing or anything

And I agree... wide aps for the ambient stuff without a shadow of doubt... but for group shots its unnecessary for a lot of the stuff we appear to do i thinkz.

Yep I'm affiliated with a club in surrey and then get a few requests to do other stuff for other people, private functions and the like... all hobby hobby hobby just with a few ££££'s placed in my back pocket for the trouble. At mos, a lot of people tend to just bounce up to you and ask for photos which is cool whereas the other club its a bit of both - although Mos can be a pain when you've got the likes of newspaper photographers and Tilllate getting in your way. Mainly I bounce up to people or they bounce up to me... but always look up and maintain eye contact with people... look a geek boy loser with your head down and you'll have less people approaching you I've found.

ads :D
