Canon S5 IS Memory card choice- SD or SDHC?..

I'm about to buy the Canon S5 IS digital camera and I want to make sure I buy the
correct memory card for that camera.

I intend to shoot both photos and movies with it, and that's really why I've decided to buy this camera. The camera takes an SDHC card and also an SD card. I don't know the difference between these two cards and I can only guess that perhaps the SDHC card is the better of the two?...and, is a "high speed card" preferable?...

And, since I do create a lot of photo-slideshows that last no more than 5 to 7 minutes, I can probably fit it onto a 1 Gig card?... The disadvantage of putting the whole shoot onto a 4 gig card is that what if the card should malfunction?.....I know it all depends on how long of a time I'm gonna shoot, but as I said, between the photos and video, it would be no longer than the 5 to 7 minutes....

And, is the SDHC the better card than the SD?....I've thought of buying two 2 gig cards also. But I do need advice at to which is the better card, SDHC or SD?

The SD specification is limited to cards of up to 2 GB capacity. Beyond 2 GB the standard is the SDHC (for High Capacity). Either will be fine. 9 minutes of video at 640x480x30 frames/sec (roughly TV video quality) occupies about 1 GB of space.

As for creating photo-slideshows, if you mean computer-processing the photos to add transitions and the like, you won't be able to play those back from the camera.

I have a 2gig SD in mine right now.

from what i've read the S5 fills up a card in video at a Minute and turns off at 4GB max, did I miss something? oops, my bad 30-40 mins.

It turns off at 4 GB, but 640x480x30 fps, the S5 max. quality, should do about 9 min/GB, which is what I see on my A620. At lower resolutions you should get up to 60 min.

So how much video can be done with the S5 IS? 60 minutes?

A 4 GB filesize limit would be 36 min. or so. But that's per clip.

I mean if you want to record like someone....doing a sport or something like that for like an hour, are you saying you cant?

The camera will stop recording after 36 min. Of course, if you find a break in the action before then, you can start the clock ticking again. I can't think of too many sports where the participant goes non-stop for 36 minutes without any kind of interruption (out-of-bounds, penalty, change side, coach conference, injury). But if you really need an hour or more, uninterrupted by anything, you really should consider a video camera, or record at a lower resolution.

I wish it would record for longer than what everyone is saying. Now that annoys me my point and shoot cybershot records for longer time. That annoys me..

From what I have read so far - it appears the limit is taken away with the CHDK Hack for the S5. It will just record until your card fills up.
