Hi all,

I'll attend to my first air show at Berlin at the end of May, as this is the first time I'll be shooting aircraft, I d'like to have some basic tips to maximise my chances of taking great shots.
I'll probably takes the following lenses with me 70-200 f2.8 IS and 100-400 for air, and 24-70 f2.8 for the ground.

Thanks in advance for your help, it's very appreciated ;)
Laurent.

Good choice.

Someone once referred me to this url when I asked the same question a few years ago...

It may be within the thread Frank posted above also... didn't have time to check his links.

Good luck!

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

I would not change lens if the smoke (vaporized oil) from the airplanes is near the ground. Also during engine startup, jets always exhaust a little vaporized fuel mist. It can get to the sensor of your camera.

Just take some caution when you are changing lens around aircraft.;)

Here are a few shots at an airshow just over a week or so.

Laurent, Are their any R/C airplane clubs around where you live. I fly R/C planes and do all the photos of the planes flying. This would help you to practice and learn to keep up with the planes in flight. They fly in scale as fast as a real plane. pos

Good advise. I fly RC also and I did practice at the RC field before the airshow.

This would help you to practice and learn to keep up with the planes in flight.

Or you could shoot traffic & get panning practice. Practice using "M", too.
How the subject affects the exposure & why manual keeps me worry free: Post # 47

First set the f-stop & shutter speed you need. Then adjust the ISO. Need an exposure crutch?

I went to an air show recently (my first taking photos) and read up on the forum prior to the event. While it helped, I guess I still missed some things. After I showed my pictures to a few others, the response I got from these 2 were that I should have shot in Manual and RAW. I'm not sure I agree with the Manual - as I panned across the sky, my values (shutter speed, aperture) would change as the light changed, and I cannot scroll that fast while shooting. The next response I got was, "well you should have changed how you metered", which I can understand. That said, I cannot for the life of me figure out how the Need an Exposure link would have helped me. I guess spot or CWA metering would have been better for me to use for the below pics. Hopefully my mess ups can help.
