Wow -- That is a lot of reach for soccer!

Nice angles, good captures -- Lately, I've been shooting stopped-down a touch to increase the DOF. It helps when more than one player gets in the frame.

FWIW.

agreed to a certain extent, the 40D with a fast focusing lens holds up pretty well plus the extra reach on the prim is nice...not to mention cost

That's what I am thinking. Sell 500mm f4 for the 300mm f2.8 and get 40d in addition to 1dmk2.

damn, i shot at 400 with 1ds mk II and find it a bit too long. Idea for soccer is 300 (if staying in the middle of the field. ) If soccer is your thing, 300IS is perfect. Sell your 500IS. ;)

if i can shot 500 at the ZOO then soccer should be fine. You just need to stay at the end zone. :)

Actually 500mm wasn't that long. The end field shots were cropped heavily. Lucky they are shuper sharp at 100%. I would think 300mm to be quite short for at least soccer. Most folks use 400mm f2.8 with and without 1.4xTC.

I was shooting just behind the goal. Need to practice more this weekend and decide if I want to got 300mm f2.8 route (for baseball/softball etc).

Couple more with same setup.

Wish I didn't clip the player on left.

Nice shots, making me to get 600 then so i can use it for sports and birds ;-)a
I know many many prefer 500 for handheld but in sports we all use or mostly use monopod even with 300, so it will not be a big deal to use 300or 400 or 500 or 600 if all will be used with a monopod anyway.

Thanks Tareq. I was using monopod so lens wait isn't big issue as unlike birds you move lot less in sports.

Bobbyz,

why don't you talk to Max and rent the 300 for the weekend? You will get more shot with 300 since you can stand from the mid field (instead at the goal line)

Good work, Bobby. Very nice indeed.

I struggled with soccer because I really didn't understand the game. But 300mm was sometimes too short for me on a 20D, especially when the action was at the other end of the field. I don't move round too much (getting too old, I guess) so sometimes I would use the 1.4x on the 120-300 to give more reach.

Like you, I struggle with 2 bodies. I guess I'n just clumsy. :-(

how long a 300mm (1.4x is an option) on Mark II can reach if you stand in the middle of the field? Can it reach the goalie? I guess it might be too long to shoot those goal shots behind the net, correct?
