how long a 300mm (1.4x is an option) on Mark II can reach if you stand in the middle of the field? Can it reach the goalie? I guess it might be too long to shoot those goal shots behind the net, correct?

it is a bit difficult to shot sport with Prime only. You will need to pick your location base on your lens focal lengh. I find out that the perfect combo with shooting sport is 300mm with or without 1.4x TC. With this combo, you can stay in the middle or at the goal line.

I took this with 400mm on FF body (1ds mk II) from the middle of the field. I miss out quite a few shots when the player run up the middle.

Very true. But 70-200 never really work out for me on soccer on its sharpness, I know some member of POTN gets shots with 70-200, but just not me. I feel like that the sun & its shade is a big fact as well... the shade on face totally ruins the quality of the shot..

I think the canon superteles are couple of notches above the 70-200mm f2.8 zoom in sharpness. But using 70-200mm f2.8 non IS on my 1dmk2, I get very good results. Same lens on 30d is not that sharp.

Well worth the effort... real nice game shots... The players look well poised, without any distracting sloppy play. Good job.

Nice shots!!
I shot THIS (external link) shot with the 70-200mm 2.8 IS on a 1DmkII and would have killed for a 400 or 500 prime on a second body when they were across the field or near the goal from midfield. My 30D would hold the 70-200 and my mkII with the prime. The 500 would have probably been too long but I bet the 400 would have done the trick.
*and I know the shot needs cropping*
I must improve my presentation, I know, I know.....and I will!
Just call me a rookie!...for now;)
