Hi guys, hope you are all well.

Ok, take a look at this.. Do you think I should try and perfect this (if so, how?) or am i just wasting my time with a bad subject?

Thanks in advance :)

Doc! you're right hehe. I used my kit lens for the shot. Ive edited the original post with the shooting information.

So is it because of sharpness that you made this assumption or something else? I'm currently in the process of researching my next lens purchase as i only have the 18-55 and an old 75-300 USM.
Lemme know, so i know what to look out for mate :)

Cheers, Will.

First off, I'd like to say that there is no subject that should be given up on. I haven't come accross a subject that can't be photographed, what you have to ask yourself is, do you want to take pictures of that subject?

Now that that's out of the way, I like the direction you were going in. I would maybe take the angle down a little and more inline with the pieces, so it kind of looks down the ranks so to speak, and maybe open up the apature so you have a narrower focal plane. The what I can only make out to be paper in the background seems to be a little out of place and bisects the rook at the top.

Just my two cents.

Actually, I wouldn't be able to judge the sharpness from this picture. The kit lens is sharp when stopped down.

It's just the bokeh is nice. Here's what the pic would look like with the 50/1.8:

That's why I asked. Whatever you do... I wouldn't recommend getting the 50/1.8... I've had 2 50/1.8 mkII and still have 1 50/1.8 mk1... They produce sharp distracting bokeh for some reason... Go and get the 50/1.4 and you'll be happy. Or get my 50/1.8... I'll sell it for a decent price. :D

Thanks everyone for the hints and tips...

I'll give the photo another try with your suggestions bob and kellie. As regards the paper at the top, I realised about that but the problem was that before I saw it in the picture I had moved the camera and could I find an angle that I liked afterwards? Not a chance, lol... Never mind.

Doc, don't laugh but I've bought an old M42 Super Takumar (old pentax) 50mm f1.4. I'm currently waiting for my eos-m42 adapter to arrive and then i'll get trying it out. Manual focus and apeture i know, but then I like a challenge, and to be honest this type of photography shouldn't be much more difficult anyway.

Well, we'll see :)

Will.

And I'm laughing because I'm thinking about getting an M42 adapter for my old zenit lens... Helios 58mm f/2. Canon 50/1.8 just kills me with it's bokeh...

When you get the M42 adapter and test it out... can you PM me plz and tell about it.

Cheers
