How heavy is your camera

Sometime I wonder how heavy a camera can be? My 10D + Grip + 420ex flash + 28-128mm is quite heavy, I can't imagine if I have a L lens on the camera.

My 100-400mm wildlife lens is about 3.5 pounds by itself.

My wildlife lens, the Bigma is 4.1 lbs. I don't know the weight of the lens, camera and tripod combo. I'm afraid if I did I would not want to haul it around anymore.

I just weighed my 10D with grip and Canon 400 5.6 L, came out to just over 6 pounds. If anyone is really THAT interested, I suppose I could weigh the other stuff I have too.

This past June I went to an Airshow. Before heading in I attached my 100-400 L IS to my 10D, the 28-135 IS to my 7NE. Packed the 17-40 L, about 6 rolls of film, extra filters and a couple bottles of water in my "slinger" camera bag. Bag on my back, 10D around my neck (lens in hand) and 7NE over my shoulder and off I went.

About 6 hours later I got back to my van and dumped all that stuff in the back. Felt like I was lighter than air. Only time I really put the cameras down was when I sat down to have a sandwich.

That night, WOW, did I have a stiff neck and back ache.

I keep trying to hang my 600 f4 and 10D around my neck but I keep ruining all my straps. Mmmmh!... May be if I just take the 1.4 TC off.....

My 1D MkII plus Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 plus 580EX weighs in at 4.51kg or 9.95lbs.

I don't like hand holding it much.

My 10D (no grip) + EF 50 f/1.8 II (about the smallest and lightest lens you can get) weighs around 1 kg (2.2 lb).

well the 1Ds on its own is 3.5 lbs, then add the 70-200 2.8 IS at 2.9 or the 100-400 IS at 3.1 and you are over 6lbs. However these aren't to bad to waly around with as you can hold the camera using the hand strap and then rest the lens in the crook of your other arm. The one that is a pain to carry for any length of time the the 85 1.2 (2.3 lbs) which is to short to carry in the above way. You end up just carrying it using the hand strap and after a couple of hours your forearm really starts to ache.

I guess the next question is "would I change anything about this situation?", well I'm not in any great rush to get the 85 1.8 (0.9 lbs)

If you want to do something scary, work out how much you have spent on camera gear and then divide that by the weight of your camera gear. This gives the cost per pound, now that is a scary number...

My usuall birding rig is ... very heavy.

A 500mm @ about 6 pounds...

and a VERY heavy tripod (got it at a yard sale.. it had been used for a telescope.. but its a real solid LARGE Manfrotto) and the heavy gimble head.

I'd say that rig is knocking 12-15 pounds?

Doesn't bear thinking about. I'm especially not going to weigh the bag. I think it's heavier than my computer bag (which usually has 3 laptops etc.).

Good point CDS, I am getting ready to buy a new tripod myself...it weighs in at a mere 13.5 pounds, not including the head! Does the one you have have red levers on it just below the head, for controlling the legs? That's the one I am looking at, I think it is the 2nd heaviest in Bogen's line. Their heaviest is 17.5 pounds.

Granted, I have no plans on using that for my hiking tripod.
