From the tracking status data of a recent Amazon purchase (books - no lenses, alas)

Date Time Location Event Details
April 28, 2008 09:33:18 PM US Carrier notified to pick up package
October 12, 2006 11:10:00 AM SAN FRANCISCO CA US Delivered

I do hope my package makes it to me and doesn't languish forever in whatever black hole it seems to have currently fallen into.

(Oh yeah, and I don't live in San Francisco and haven't signed for the package despite what the UPS site says.)

Well, yeah, I guess my current mild annoyance would be raging insecurity/panic attack if it were a lens :)

Happened to me on one of my orders. It eventually showed up. But if UPS' page had been accurate it would have saved a lot of wear and tear on my keyboard.

Plus think about how easy to explain it . . ."No, dear. I didn't order that. Must be a gift."

The problem with this, as I understand it, is that UPS re-uses tracking numbers.

So that tracking number you got from Amazon, may have actually been an item that WAS delivered to San Francisco two years ago.

Once the system updates, you will see the correct data. Unfortunately, that system may not update until AFTER you get your package.

So much for online tracking, huh?

This little quirk got totally pushed from my mind this morning after a firmware update on my Macbook went bad. Real bad. :( (The light's on but no one's home.)

But things can't get any worse so I checked my package status. It's now "out for delivery" but not "delivered". I've got another package on that same truck that has been "delivered". I do expect to find both tonight.

that would be awesome to be able to buy something you want, and have it sent to you for the first time you thought of getting it.

Ah, if only it worked that way. There are a few things I could take care of also. ;)

Actually, the problem is UPS. With them reusing tracking numers, it's easy to see that your package was delivered somewhere else, two or three years ago.

Is it a UPS generated tracking number, or an Amazon one, generated for insertion in to the UPS system :)

According to Amazon, (yeah, I know) it's the numbers that UPS assigns to them.

Think about it, really. How would Amazon be able to reuse a UPS tracking number?

They have invisible workers too! UPS has not been by all day but there was a delivery sticker left in the mailroom at the complex today, but there was no package in the office as it said there was. I called, and they said the driver will be by at 4pm, which is now, and still, no UPS. Hopefully my package appears just as nicely as the delivery notice :)
