Would you purchase a Mark III used or would you pony up the extra money for piece of mind? Let's say it's either already fixed, a blue, or completely beyond the affected serial number scope.
Thoughts?

Whats the price differential? If it's less than 10% then I would be much less likely to entertain a used body.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

i'd pay $3600 for a used blue dot with less than 5k clicks if the seller allowed a 72-hour inspection period.

depend on pricing. If the different is not much different, just get a new one.

Man if I am paying over $3,000 for something, besides a car or house, it had better be new.

Unless it was a significant savings, or the camera was bought very recently, I'd have to go new...and hope the new firmware is "the" fix. ;)

with the mirror thing and AF, I am looking for a new one myself and want a serial number higher than the ones listed in the factory service bulletin. I don't like the fact they will only fix/upgrade the older ones with problems. With my luck, if I had one of the models affected by the time I got enough use for it to have problems it would be out of warranty. Since I do not take 1K pics a day like a pro would.

Here is a cut and paste from the stickies:

Start of repairs for AF Mirror Adjustment Issue

To owners of the EOS-1D Mark III:

We regret to inform that some units of the EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR camera (launched in May 2007) have been found to have an issue with the Auto Focus Mirror. This issue is limited to a specific range of units, and results in unstable focusing and AF tracking performance when using AI servo continuous shooting, particularly in high temperatures.

Please check the serial number as indicated below to confirm whether this issue is relevant to your camera.

We are making preparations to offer repairs free of charge and will start accepting repairs from the 10th of December 2007 onwards.

We offer our most sincere apologies to all who have been inconvenienced by this issue.

How to identify affected products:

If the serial number on the bottom of the camera is between 501001 and 546561, with the exception of serial numbers found here it could be affected by the "AF mirror adjustment issue"

lets see... warranty vs no warranty should be the question here, not new vs used

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

But with Canon, all you need for warranty purpose is the receipt or in the case of the old Mkiii the service letter. So a used Blue dot may have less warranty on it than a Used pre-Blue dot.

It all started as a hobby with a Rebel XT & KIT lens. $5K worth of equipment & $0 of income later, all I have to show for it is a harddrive full of pictures and priceless memories!! Yeah it's still worth it :)
