Loose 10-22 hood?

I just picked up a used Canon 10-22 with a hood, but the hood (EW-83E) seems awfully loose. I can jostle it around about 1-2mm in each direction when mounted.

Anybody else's hood like this, or is this normal?

Assuming you are a male in the USA, I'm suprized that you haven't thought of duct tape as a solution yet. A little play never hurt anyone.

Shouldn't move at all once its on. Check for a broken edge on the lens and hood (hopefully on the hood).

I was just thinking of putting some tape on the hood to make the connection tighter. :D

I don't see any damage to the hood or the lens.

Now I'm thinking I'm just paranoid. Tape it is! :)

edit: put some tape on, and it looks hideous. I guess I'll just live with the hood a little loose.

It's plastic. Plastic flexes and bends. As long as it doesn't fall off, who cares?

Being loose is not normal, and it reduces the benefit of the hood. One of the things a hood can do for you is act as a "bumper" to ward off the effect of impact against things around you.

I would suggest that you purchase a NEW hood, not one somebody got rid of because they wore its mounting threads out or messed up by modifying the mounting threads.

That makes sense, I guess the mounting thread on the hood has been worn out and isn't gripping the lens properly. I guess I'll have to pickup a new hood.

Thanks,

I had a lens hood that was a little loose for my taste (IIRC, it was on the 24-70mm). I used a needle nose plier and gently dimpled the bayonet flange on the hood (not the lens!) and it's been tight ever since.
