Hai gais! So I'm taking a break from school for the summer and I'm dealing with 2 jobs and another casual photography business on the side. Considering that, my budget is still tight.

What I plan on doing is finally biting the bullet and buying a 5D soon...But I am torn to which lens I should get. I'll be selling my current set up so that'll take off around $850-$800 off my purchase. I like the fact the 5D can come with a 24-105mm f\4 L lens but I'm not sure if it's fast enough for me. I do like its versatility in range though...On the other hand, if I bought the kit, I could sell the 24-105mm and buy a 24-70mm f\2.8 L which will definitely allow me to work better in lower light and give off better bokeh and arguably better IQ.

Then theres primes...I LOVE the IQ that they can produce and their prices are just right...I could purchase 2 maybe 3 prime lenses for the price of a 24-70mm...I love the bokeh they produce and their optics. I am still unsure if I should get them do to fixed focal lengths tho...I'd have to switch quickly or plan out my shooting style, all of this can be compromised though.

So what would you guys do in my position?

Hmmm good question...I'm trying to lean towards more of a fine art of photography but mostly candids, portraits, some landscape, band promos, low light shots like at concerts and shows...I suppose these kinds of shots would benefit with good DOF and large apertures.
But then there are times, well a lot of times I'll just head out and walk around finding anything interesting to shoot.

I voted for buy the kit and sell lens for the 24-70. Because of your last post on lowlight concerts, candids, etc...

I would try the kit lens for a while though. You may find that you like it. If you take care of it, it will be worth the same so why not try it.

If you like primes, then go that route. For the price of the L zooms, you could have a 28 f/1.8, 50 f/1.4 and the 85 f/1.8 which will all give you speed and great IQ.

If you're not sure you could live with just primes, but you need the low light ability, then the 24-70 is good.

If you're OK using a flash in low light (which will probably be necessary in a lot of situations even with the 24-700, then the 24-105 is probably the most versatile of the bunch. I have one and love it, but I also have primes for low light stuff as well.

i won't vote cause the choice really depends on your shooting style.

what works for one may not work for another.

Aye.

I bought the kit, kept the 24-105, added the 24-70, kept my 50/1.4 and added an 85/1.2. :o

Oh, and the slashes go bottom-left to top-right. Sorry, but backslashes where forward slashes are correct is one of my pet peeves.

I didn't realize that whoops!

I use a 430ex and enjoy it, but sometimes I like using available natural lighting because it just looks a lot better, imo...

I suppose I'll try out the 5D with the 24-105mm f/4 IS L and see if I enjoy the set up. If not I can always sell it and buy 3 or so primes. This lens does have a good reputation, so we'll see how it all goes! Thanks guys.

if you sell the 24-105 and buy primes, will you be shopping for used? if you get a body and buy new primes, will you be shopping for a used zoom later? I would rather search for a good used prime than a used zoom myself. Just a thought. I bought the 5d body, used my old lenses for awhile and started buying lenses later. I ended up buying longer focal length primes than I would have looked at when I hadn't owned a full frame sensor yet. when i bought my zooms, I went for 4x but slow rather than 3x and fast. Just my thoughts, hope this helps.
