Haoda and Katz Eye both make screen for 400D which the user can install themselves with a little effort. Biggest issue to note about these will affect anyone using relatively slow lenses (f4, f/5.6) and who prefer to use Partial/Spot metering, as the screens affect metering accuracy...someone on POTN has reported as much as 3EV error with the 40D in using the aftermarket screens.

Any one know where I can get a focus screen for an XTi (400D)? Can I install it myself?

Multiple exposures - love it, nice for trying to catch lighting too - you have to do everything in bloody photoshop these days :-P

I never owned a modern film camera that would leave the leader out... I only researched or used consumer models though.

You mean a replacement or an change? The replacement you can get from Canon by calling the parts and asking for the (plate)Focusing Screen for your Kiss X/400D/Xti. While your at it, since it is a DIY thing, order one as a spare, they are considerably "cheap" ~10-15 each. Order the (plate) Superimposed on as well. This is the other part of the VF, this shows your focus points. You may want a spare as well, both parts scratches very easily. I suggest wearing rubber gloves-powder and oil free.

Change... change to something with a focus prisim.

One of the reasons I would like to have a prisim is so I can be more accurate when manually focusing very long slow lenses. I have a 300mm f5.6 and a 2x tele that is so slow the AF won't work.:( So, Haoda and Katz Eye may not be viable either... at least in solving that problem.

It would still be nice to be able to manually focus accurately, in many situations... but... I'm getting off topic.

Ah, I don't think it's worth throwing your in camera meter off...unless you have a handheld and will manually meter your shots with that?

^ Plus it's only useful, really, if you MF. I don't follow the Haoda/Katz Eye screens so I'm not sure, but do they have circle/ellipse markings on their screens matching the Canon?

My first SLR - a Canon FX the only thing I miss about it is that it was mechanical, if the battery failed I only lost the meter.
The big thing I Don't miss is the place I bought it, a PX in Dong Ha, Vietnam

Jack

I'm with you, Jack. Bought my Canon FX at the PX in Qui Nhon, in 1967. That's when I became a Canon shooter, taking shots of the choppers that made the rotors look frozen in mid air. I really beat the stuff out of that camera and it never missed a click.

Ok... it took some research, but since reading this thread I had to figure out exactly what my first camera was. It was a Sears KSX Super, aka Ricoh KR-10.

I remember, to do multiple exposures I had to release the film spool and hold the rewind crank in place while advancing the winder. I guess a lot of manual cameras could do that. The film might wiggle a little so it was a bit of a crap shoot. :)

I have upgraded to a 40D from my 10D, and the thing I missed most was how robust, battle hardened and bomb proof the 10D seems in retrospect. It was a real work horse, and after a few problems have arisen with the new one, I know I have to treat it a lot more gingerly. The things I would do with the old 10 I wouldnt consider with the 40. Sad, when you realize technology and upgrades limit themselves. But then again bread and water vs. caviar for the rest of it....
