I have been searching around to find out what lens he used on his canon rig. Anybody know what he uses.

I thought that Dave did most of his work with a 5D? He was in a studio that I shoot in the other day with a 5D in hand and looking at my 1DMKIII and another photographers 1DSMKIII. He has a lot going on with his lighting I can tell you that. He also has a lot going on with his post.

I didn't spend much time on it but I vaguely recall reading or listening to something that mentioned typical primes, 20 - 50mm types, but this was a while ago. Considering a lot of what he does is lighting and processing I didn't pay too much attention to the gear so much as him talking about his entire process. It was rather interesting.

Clearly he's a newbie for using a prosumer body with a 3rd party lens.

I REALLY don't think his lens is a major influence on his photos. I'm sure it's of quality however there is a lot more to his work than the lens, or even the camera... The 'Dave Hill Effect' is a photoshop marvel not a photography marvel IMO.

I disagree, its concept, planning, execution which involve the subject, photographer and everything else that goes with it. No different than Ansel planning and then executing in his darkroom, just updated for the computer age.

Liking it or not is a different matter, but obviously he's on to something. I've been seeing his name buzz around for a good couple years now. He must be doing something right.

Yeah I really would not concentrate much on his lens or body. It is all about his lighting and post processing.

it seems like the crowd (here) is split on liking or not liking. regardless, if that look is selling right now, I'll do what I can to come as close as possible to the effect!

Heh, many have tried and (mostly) failed. I was glad to read he is thinking of moving in a more 'tame' direction, maybe people will stop trying to badly replicate it.

i really like the way he goes about his business with lighting and post processing and i try to create it myself, but again i am wondering what lens he uses because i like the angles he gets with it, (i can not think of a clearer way of saying that sorry)

In terms of lenses most of it looks like it's done with a wide angle - look into a wide angle lens for whatever body you are using and you should be able to achieve the same kind of perspectives. Then work on lighting and crazy post processing. Do a search here for Ryan Flynn, nickname "Dr Flynn" as he's done some work that is quite Dave Hill inspired with a 16-35 and 10-22.

I'm not even a fan of the look. What's so great about it?
