Canon EP-EX15 (eyecup extender) - Why would anyone use it?

I bought this accessory the day I got my XTI along w/ the BG-E3. I figured I might as well get all the trimmings. However, it only stayed on my XTI for a whole 2 mins. While it does keep your nose off the screen it shrinks the viewfinder about 30%. This is HUGE trade-off just to keep your nose off the screen. I didn't return it simply out of laziness.

Is there any other reason why anyone would buy this accessory?

For some it helps them see better. Idk...why'd you get it anyhow? A screen can be wiped

I thought I'd pimp my camera...

Its not so much made to keep your nose off the screen but to let ppl w/ large noses get closer to the eyecup.

With a full frame camera its more useful than on an APS-C, but even then I personally cant use the thing. Some people remove the lens and use it like that for the extended relief. I personally prefer the nikon dk-21m https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=338146

I have a 5D and 2 20Ds and have extenders on all of them. To me it is terribly irritating to have my nose touch the camera. That little space helps a bunch. I do not notice it making the view smaller.

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

There is a good alternative to this. The BrightScreen D2 magnifier is an eyepiece that increases the size of the image you see, yet it retains all sharpness/focus, and doesn't reduce the visible area at all. It actually inreases eye relief by a good amount as well. I sticks out a little bit further than a stock eyepiece so your nose would be further as well.

I shoot with my left eye, so my nose, and often cheek are pressed up on the camera. I keep a screen protector from my PDA on the screen. I don't actually use the screen for much other than an occasional histogram check. It does get pretty wet when im shooting in hot locations. Never had a problem.

That's a bit expensive to put on my 400D... I'll go with the Olympus ME-1 for $40, Alex.

I also shoot with my left eye, and I can't stand having my face pressed up against the camera. That magnifier that Blue S2 speaks of looks like a good accessory, but it is a bit pricey.

I used to use one because I used to get terrible eye strain and the extender really helped. The problem seems to have gone away, so I don't use it anymore. :)

I almost bought one until I tried it. I had the same complaint as you, didn't like the smaller viewfinder.

Because most of us remove the plastic lens inside and use it to move the eyepiece further back from the camera. ;)

I'm with you on this. The viewfinder is MUCH smaller. What a piece of junk.

You guys DO realize it's made for eyeglass wearers, so they can see the entire viewfinder, right? ;)

"The Canon EP-EX15 Eyepiece Extender extends the eyepiece by 5/8" (15mm) from the camera body and reduces the viewfinder magnification by 30%. This is useful for eyeglass wearers and others who wish to prevent the tip of their nose from touching the camera body. It also prevents condensation or fogging."
