Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 AND....

First off, I would always base my lens battery on a very good medium range zoom. You would have that in the 17-50mm f/2.8 Tamron.

Match this medium range zoom up with a very-good tele zoom and you will have a very versatile duo.

My first choice would be the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS zoom (because of the convenience of IS). However, this combination will run you about $120 over your stated budget - it will be worth it because you will have IS in the long focal lengths where it really helps out.

My second choice would be the 70-200mm f/4L (this comes in second only because of lack of IS). This combination would hit your $1,000 budget right on the head.

I have not used the Tamron but, I use an almost identical focal length (17-55mm f/2.8 IS) lens and I consider the combination of this focal length (with constant f/2.8 aperture) as an excellent pair with the longer lens. I pair up the 17-55mm with the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and have owned the 70-200mm f/4L and have used the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens. I believe that either of these lenses would be a great match with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens.

Later on, you could (if funds are a bit short) purchase a used Conon 420ex flash. I have the 420ex and 550ex flashes and consider both of them very good performers. They don't have the bells and whictles of the 430ex or 580ex but, will deliver very good exposure.

could someone answer my question please:

Is there any site I can find the difference between 17mm and 24mm on a crop body? any picture to illustrate this will help.

Sorry sgogula, There is a photo showing outlines of different focal lengths which has been posted several times and I can't remember where it is. Maybe someone remembers?

If you can, go to any camera shop and try out a 17-? lens and a 24-? lens and see for yourself. I actually enjoy the 24-104L, on my Xti, but for landscapes it will be a problem unless you have a lot of room to back up (on a crop body). That's why I also have the 10-22.

The difference between 17 and 24mm isn't massive but if 24mm is as wide as you can go I think it'll bug you at some point unless you have another lens to cover wider. Showing you an image to illustrate the difference isn't very helpful as it's in the real world when you'll notice it. As Just Be says, sometimes you can't step back any further.

Aww geez, why is the L winning this poll? 2 decent lenses plus a good flash vs. one limited L lens? On an XTi? No thanks.
See my sig for my vote. ;)

I agree.
Option 2 gives you alot more range, wider aperture to 50mm better low light shooting and IS.

I do not see myself buying 70-200 f4L in the near future not because of the price but with the size, it is huge for me..

Most of the pictures I take would fall under 17-100 range, Since there is no ONE SINGLE lens in that range, I am looking for the combination of two lens..

Then how about Tamron 17-50 + 85 f/1.8?

Er, what about the 18-125 OS you have in your poll? Trust me, 1mm really doesn't make that much difference.

you are first one to say 18-125 OS..I had expected that this would get more votes but this turned out to the least preferred...
I dont know but there was not even a single comment on this lens may be because it is slow.

Probably because it isn't out yet. I think pre-orders started last month, but we've yet to see a real review.

If I were you I would save some money and just get a Tamron 17-50 2.8 or a Sigma 17-70, because as you say, 100+ isn't important right now to you. After shooting with that for awhile then decide what to do next.

Why does the 24-105 have so many votes? Bunch of lemmings on this forum. "Get the L! L means its better than everything else!"

#2 is the best option. #3 is good if you prefer wide angle. But you get no f/2.8

I have done exactly the same. I see your point, you are right I do not need 100+ now..If i feel I am missing something then I would go for 55-250.

Thanks to all for helping me to take right decision..
