hi TS. i'm in the same position as you
i'm looking to get lenses for my 450D
however currentlly what i have in mind is :

Sigma 18-200 DC OS + Sigma 30mm f/1.4

the 18-200 will be used for general walk around and outdoor , while the 30mm is for indoor low light.

hope i'll be satisfied by it and maybe it'll be usefull for you too.

anyway another thing is thta i've tried to use my friend's tamron 17-50 but found that it's not quite sharp wide open.
i feel that my IS kit lens produced sharper image :(
tha'ts why i don't buy the tamron.

the canon 17-55 IS is very good though, but very expensive :(

I went for option #2, nice coverage plus a flash for under a grand what else could you as for realistically. To top it off it seems people are pretty happy with the 55-250.

#2 has to be the best balance between quality and versatility.

Your friend must have a bad copy. The IQ on the Tamron is one of the best available by any brand in that range. The Canon 17-55IS may have a slight edge, but not by much. Also the Tamron is $600 cheaper.

I recommend your friend have the lens looked at. Mine is super sharp even at 2.8. :D

6D, 60D, Various L and non-L Lenses and more gear than I have time to use. ;)

That Tamron link above is amazingly useful.. funny thing, I've been there dozens of times and never knew I could just use the slider bar at the bottom to change the main image. I've always manually changed the two smaller ones and then zoomed my browser in to see the differences..

doh.
