There must be many users of this forum who use Firefox in preference to, say, Internet Explorer. What exactly are the benefits of Firefox over IE, as you see it?

There is actually more virus protection in Firefox. Not intended, but by simply being coded different The internal commands are different,so the virus does not know what to do. And there are TONS of add ons that you can get to intergrate into the browser to do things or shortcut things. Some say it is faster then IE. It is well worth the download and try. It is free after all. If you dont like it just deleate it.

The main benifit is that is is not a Microsoft product!!!

It works. You can customize it. It isn't IE!

I love it because of the different add-ons and themes you can apply.

I would say security too, but I think with all things with computers, the more popular a platform gets, the more likely people will try to hack into it and exploit any weaknesses.

My main gripe with FF is the obnoxious amount of memory it uses. Right now, I've been running FF since I got to work this morning at 8 (its 4:20 now) and my task manager is saying its using 360,264 K of memory (out of 1 gig). I hear that this will be fixed with FF3 though, so that'll go away :)

The web development debugging tools are excellent -- couldn't live without them. There's also built-in spell check and lots of awesome add-ons that put FF worlds ahead of IE.

It's fast, customizable, more secure, and it just works better ;)
I never use internet explorer anymore after I started using firefox a few years ago.

the tabbed browsing was a big draw for me, but now ie has it too. The download size is much smaller, and quick, without the bloatware you don't need. With the add ons and extensions, you can decide your level of bloat, instead of MS forcing it on you.

Also the new version FF3 Beta has color-management. Though you have to turn it on manually. The how-to is here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=484291

Heh, I'm afraid that's a little bit of a massively incorrect oversimplification ;)

Firefox is more secure because it's designed from the ground up to be secure, not with "security" tacked on as an afterthought, like everything Microsoft does. There isn't any "virus protection" in IE or Firefox, it's just that Firefox has far fewer vulnerabilities through which assorted nasty-ware can make its way into your system (on Windows, anyways.)

Of course, the reason I use Firefox is because it ships by default with Ubuntu, and it's marginally better than the other choices (namely Konqueror and Epiphany).

Thats the only one I need. In principal alone I avoid MS products. I don't like their marketing thievery.

Haha, I might be the only clown on this planet that doesn't actually use Firefox. I don't know, to be honest, I've found Firefox largely overrated. Yes, it's a great solution to the disgustingly vulnerable IE, but at the core, it seemed really lacking to me. It wasn't very responsive to me, and I found some of the key shortcuts very multi-step. It may be just an internet browser that's meant to load a page, and while it does just that, that's about all it does. I always need programs that can respond at a dime and handle a load, not bog down. Right now, I have 29 tabs open in Opera.

Ehh, ultimately Firefix is great, but anything compared to IE is fantastic. There are plenty of other great tools out there though, let's not forget that.

I don't care about the themes. however it did something IE didn't when it came out. and that's be better than IE.

it stops pop ups, it's got plugins (such as FxIF) it handles tabs better.

and then you compare it to IE 7, and the setup is easy, you open a new tab and you don't have to configure what it does. it's just a simple browser. and that's all it ever needs to be.

Tabbed browsing is just brilliant and the add-ons are great (Tab Mix Plus, Adblock etc). The memory leak can cause problems but it's easily fixed.

I still have to use IE for some football streaming and ehhh that's about it.
