Visiting San Diego

I am planning a trip to the San Diego area for the 4th of July. I would really like to get some great coastal pictures at sunset. I plan on visiting La Jolla, so I have that covered. I am willing to drive up to 3 hours if i need to to get some great photos. Any ideas as to where to go? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Oh, this will be a 10 day trip, not just a weekend one. I have focal lengths 18-400 covered too. Thanks for your time.

Now, I haven't been in San Diego in the evening in many years. But if it is anything like Los Angeles, you'll need to plan to visit your sunset location every evening until you get the photos you want. One day you may have a very bland sunset, and the next it may be spectacular. The weather changes pretty quickly.

Coronado Island would be a great sunset location, also Point Loma which is at the entrance of the bay. You may even want to drive up to the town of Julian in the mountains about 45 minutes northeast of San Diego....I imagine that would have some excellent sunset opportunities over the valleys...

Coronado at the ferry landing will give you a great shot across the bay to San Diego. Another fantastic place to shoot is the Point Loma light house. The is at the Cabrillo National Monument. Light house, tide pools, overlooks the Navy landing strip and the commercial airlines taking off and landing. It's high on a point, so on a clear day you can see all the way down the coast. Definitely stop here before deciding to drive a couple of hours. I drive 1.5 hours south from Orange County just to shoot there.
