Looking to get into macro, and want to start with some tubes.
Please post some shots with tubes, and which kind.

Here is a quick shot I took a couple of weeks ago with the Kenko Extension tubes 36mm and 20mm on my Canon 100-400 set at 130mm.
Aperture f/7.1, shutter speed 1/50 sec, ISO 400, off camera flash with 580EX

At 100mm you are pretty close to your subject. 400mm you have some stand off but your subject isn't as magnified either.
below 100mm is where you are going to get some pretty decent magnification.
These tubes coupled with the Canon 70-200 f2.8 is a perfect combo.
You'll also get great results with the Nifty 50.

I bought a set of Kenko tubes and am using my nifty 50. Can someone tell me what the ideal settings would be using this setup? I look thru the viewfinder and the DOF is so narrow it is unreal. Is this normal? Should I be manually focusing? I think so, but I believe the tubes are for either one--they are new for eos systems apparently.

Is there a helpful link on using these that I have missed somewhere? I really love macro and want to learn everything I can.

Many thanks.

That's for a 100mm (or other, I reckon) macro lens though. I am fairly certain that 68mm of tubes on a nifty will give you 1.47x.

I think that if the OP wants to give macro a try without a big financial investment, a reverse-mount for his 50mm would be a better bet.

If I'm wrong on this, someone please correct men, but through the viewfinder with that setup your aperture will be as wide open as possible to facilitate focusing, so on the 1.8 at macro magnifications that's *razor* thin. Set your aperture lower - 8 to 11, for example, and use of that DOF preview button! See if that helps.

I think I was using an F4 or so, I will try that. How do I mount the 50 in reverse? Is there a adapter ring or something--can someone provide a link?

ALSO, do these tubes work with telephoto lenses? I have sigma 17-70 and it was even worse trying to focus than the 50.

Many thanks!

Hi okiediver, the reverse-mount comment was directed at "angry dad". Since you already have tubes, I don't think you'll need to bother with reverse-mounting. (up to) 1.5x with your nifty+tubes is *plenty* of magnification to work with for the time being. Reverse-mounting means you lose autofocus and aperture control (on newer lenses you have to set aperture and remove the lens while holding the DOF preview button before reverse-mounting). Stick with the tubes you've already got :)

If you want see the ring I'm referring to, check this out: http://www.novoflex.com …tml/macro_accessories.htm (external link). Another popular option is to reverse-mount a 50mm lens to another (longer) lens.

I've seen good macro taken from 70-200mm zooms with tubes, so safe to say it should work with your 17-70. You should expect that difficulty autofocusing - adding in the tubes essentially reduces the amount of available light, so AF is slower. To be honest, I've never really found AF very helpful in macro. It might be worthwhile to stick to manual focus.

Hope this helps!

Wow Ook, that is an expensive rig! I am going to order the ring that lets you mount one lens face to face with another today, I have tried reversing the kit lens and holding it up to my camera, you get good magnification but its a pain! http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ge.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t (external link)
I found the face to face coupler at B&H, and only $8!
