They do not have a catcher at this age, so I probably should have went portrait. I guess I could crop it. Shot was taken with the Rebel XTi.

Your right, a vertical crop would work much better. It wold cut out the majority of the distracting background (the bags and the bats). But it looks as if you had quite a few photogs there with you. There are 2 in the picture alone, plus yourself.

TK:

From your EXIF:

Lens (mm): 120
ISO: 800
Aperture: 4.5
Shutter: 1/4000
Exp. Comp.: 0.0
Flash Comp.:
Program: Aperture Priority
Focus Mode: AI Focus AF

First of all, the shot isn't bad. However, you've missed several things that make an action photo much better. These are a good solid shot of the face; peak action, a clean background, a tight shot, and the ball. Plus, there's way too much dead space around the batter, and you've cut off his feet.

What you have is a rather blah shot of the batter looking out to the field with only the slightest hint of his face. Swing follow-through shots can work, however they are generally best taken from the "back" side, as in this shot below:

I would also suggest AI Servo Vs. AI Focus, and if you can, open your lens up further to better blur the background. Speaking of backgrounds, yours is very cluttered, which is pretty normal for LL ball fields. You can improve this by shooting from as low of a position as you can get.

There are a few generic pointers in episode 1 of the podcast in my signature that apply to this and many sports photography situations.

There is also another recent thread on batter shots here:

DMW your shots are awesome. Hopefully in time, I will be able to produce alot better shots than I am currently taking. I only have the stock lenses, I personally cannot justify the purchase of a lens that is so expensive.

I took about 95 pics that day and was happy with probably 10, so in my mind that wasn't too bad...lol....still trying to adapt to the quick change of settings that will produce the best lighting, that has been my biggest struggle, trying to find a "somewhat" consistant setting that doesn't exist.
