Hello group, greetings from Greece

I really need your advice here!
I have an ef 400mm f/5.6 L lens which I use for wildlife photography on a 40d body. Is it stupid... thinking upgrading to a used 500mm f/4.5 L??
Will I see better image quality? I never had the opportunity to check the 500mm f/4.5 L by myself so any advice would be really helpful:D

Thank you in advance
Teo

No I mean the canon 500mm f/4.5 L. Will I see better quality than my 400mm f/5.6 L? Does it worth the extra cost?

Yes indeed. The 500/4.5 (Canon or Sigma) is a great lens. I had one but finally sold it to get the 500/4 IS version. I think many would keep their 500/4.5 and never need anything longer or more expensive.

I shoot with the same set-up as you do. Yes, the 500L will give you an improvement in image quality.

Isn't canon 500 4.5 out of production? It is nice lens, lot les heavy than 500mm f4 IS. And cheaper too.

i to think it should be sharper but not be a big amount the 400f5.6 is one of canons best to start with.

Heck, that one is new compared to some lenses.

That is why I get so fed up with date codes! Good glass is for a long time!

The 300 2.8L is from 1987!

I have the EF 500 f4.5 L, but not the 400 f5.6, so I cannot make a side to side comparison. I will tell you this, the 500 f4.5 is very sharp, it will not dissapoint.

I have shot next to people using the 500 f4 IS, and I think I like the fact that my f4.5 is much lighter.

Best wishes, Don
