I would mirror it. I tried it, and it's a simple change that I like a lot better.

The lighting is much too contrasty. However, I acknowledge that you may have intended that.

Wasn't there a columnist for Popular Photography magazine named Herbert Keppler who used such a self-portrait as his signature?

I'll critique yours if you'll critique mine :D.

The contrast doesn't bother me...in fact I rather like it. There are a couple of other things though that catch my eye.

First, the focus around your eye looks a little soft. It looks like you shot this into a mirror so it could just be a distortion in the glass, but the lens on the camera and your suit look sharp. More specifically, your face looks soft compared with your suit.

Second...and this is just a personal taste issue but I think you have way too much "space" in the left side of the image that doesn't really add anything. I think a vertical crop to an 8x10 would work better here but other than that I like the composition.

Third...ok...this is a nitpick but...Canon is spelled backwards. I have to agree with the comment about flipping the image. Again it looks like you shot this in a mirror, but to me the backwards lettering is really distracting...makes me feel like I'm trying to read Chinese or Egyptian or something.

Fourth...again I don't know if this is the mirror or not, but there are a number of "specs" in the image...not sure if it's something on the mirror or dirt on you lens/sensor. Maybe try a paper towel and some Windex on the mirror next time :D.

Again I do like the composition and I think the lighting looks pretty good too. Nice concept for a self portrait.

Just my humble $.02 worth!
Peace,
Jim

Very curious - the specks. They look more like what I usually get when scanning my film in and using that to create digital images. That would also account for the high contrast.

I don't suppose there's any chance that the Canon in the photo is a film camera, is there?
