can you still "Revert to shoot settings" going back to your original RAW file later, or is it a permanent change?

Being a newbie to DPP, I don't want to tweak something wrong and ruin my original file, so I've been converting my ready-to-print files to JPEG and leaving the rest as-is... but if I could save my processing changes w/o ultimately ruining the original file it would be nice.

I did the entire tut on the canon site, but don't remember if that was covered.

All RAW file editing is non-destructive so yes, Revert to shoot settings (CTRL+Shift+Z) will remove any changes you made and restore it back to original form.

This is covered at the very end of Lesson 14 on Recipes.

I *thought* that was so, but wanted to be sure before I messed something up. Thanks so much!

The same is true for JPG in DPP, NO?

No, only if you do 'Save as', thereby not overwriting the original jpg and getting two versions.

Actually, RAW conversion is non-destructive because you can only save the converted image with 'Save as', i.e. as a new file in a different format. No RAW converter will overwrite RAW image data, although DPP does rewrite the metadata (but without overwriting the 'shot as' data.)

Okay, I was right, I checked the DPP manual. Page 78.

"Because adjustment made with the tool palette (recipe) only changes the image processing conditions, the 'orginal image data itself' remans unaffected. Therefore, there are no problems with image deterioration that arise with editing and you can readjust your images any number of times."

So in DPP, TIFF, RAW and JPG are non-destructive.

Picasa 2 also hides the original and changes are made to a new one, so one could revert back there as well.

My bad. I just tried it and you are right. Guess this old dog still needs to learn some new tricks.

Of course, since the image data remains untouched, the edits will be seen only in DPP, even if you do 'Save as', and the actual image will be changed only by 'Convert and save'.

Good point since so many of us use several editors, though I wish I didn't have to.
