I'm wondering if anyone always bring their DSLR around. My wife usually have her SD1000 in her purse. I have only brought my kit for special ocassions when I know I will take some pics (i.e. birthday party, etc).

My question is:
How often & what occasions do you usually bring your camera out?
Do you attract attention when you bring it around?
Do you bring more than 1 lens? Zoom or Prime? Focal length?
Do you put it in a "stealthy" bags such as crumplers, hang it by the neck strap, put it in a bag that's it's obviously a camera bag?
Do you bring for "fun" (you don't want to miss a shot that you like) or work (you don't want to miss taking a shot you can sell)?

If the occassion calls for a camera, I bring my 40D. I wouldn't be happy with a P&S.
On occassion I will be asked what paper I with.
The lenses I bring along depend on where I'm going. For example, if I'm going to shot a game I'll bring my 70-200L 2.8 and a 1.4 Extender. For Basketball I bring my 85 f/1.8 and my 50 f/1.8 If I take a vacation where I drive, I take all my gear. If I fly, I take my lower price 70-300 4/5.6 and 17-50 f/2.8.
I have 4 different bags, depending on what I'm taking but they all look like camera bags.

I sure as heck don't drag all my lenses to everything. But like Mike R, when an event deserves a few shots I take the camera and shoot it.

One good thing to do if the event involves you is to get the shots you need and then put the camera down. Make sure that you remain a part of the event.

my cam + 24-105 in a toploader is always with me on weekends/public holidays. you never know when a photo opportunity may turn up (i've shot street & sports performances which i didn't knew about beforehand). 95% of the time, the 24-105 covers all my casual street shooting needs. i don't know if people are aware im carrying a camera (the triangular toploader doesnt have a too familiar 'Canon' logo and i would think Lowepro is not that popular from where i am). the less attention the better. ever since i switched to a 1D series, i avoid slinging the bare camera on my shoulder, its always inside the bag instead. oh, third world country by the way.

I live by the theory that you never know when you may get a perfect shot and that there are moments and memories everywhere. I do not want to miss one. I take my DSLR everywhere. I do not however take all of my gear everywhere. I want to be able to stand straight when i get old and my bag is pretty heavy. my most common selection is a wide angle and a med telephoto. Most often 18-55mm and 70-300. I also take my monopod, spare cf cards, spare batteries, and a good selection of filters. Sometimes a good selection of filters can really make the difference. All of this gear is placed in a tamrac express 6 and carried with ease.

Once I get my 28 1.8 I'll pair that up with the 50 1.8, I'll probably look to bring the trusty XT along alot more.

My camera is always with me. But I do show restraint as to when and what I take pictures of. I am a pj so it's always in the trunk in case I stumble upon a news worthy event.
Do you attract attention when you bring it around? It really depends. In some situations it does and some it does not.

Do you bring more than 1 lens? Zoom or Prime? Focal length?

I always have several lenses. 4 primes and 2 zooms are usually in my big bag and then I consolidate to a small bag for shooting.

Do you put it in a "stealthy" bags such as crumplers, hang it by the neck strap, put it in a bag that's it's obviously a camera bag?

I have two Domke bags one is a F1X and the other is a F6.

Do you bring for "fun" (you don't want to miss a shot that you like) or work (you don't want to miss taking a shot you can sell)?

I bring my camera for both reasons. I love my work. Their is nothing that can brighten up my day more than a really sexy shot.

Pretty much any situation where I'm safe with such a bulky camera. I wouldn't bring it to a football game here at Texas A&M with the heat, sweat, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with others for a couple of hours (Not to mention the "Saw 'Em Off" which involves each row swaying back and forth - not practical at all with a 3 lb DSLR around your neck). This situation calls for my SD1000, albeit with its meager 35-105mm zoom. If I went to a game with more room and some shade I'd consider bringing the 10D.

Next fall I'll have my Elan IIe up here and I may bring it once or twice.

I bought a Slingshot 200 in hopes that it would be smaller and nicer to carry then my slightly larger Microtrekker 200... but I f***ing hated that bag so I sold it locally for what I paid for it. I felt really stupid having that diagonal strap go from the right side to the main strap on the left side.... I'd rather have the 'trekker with me. So I think I'm gonna have to get a Toploader or something smaller..

Sadly I don't bring my DSLR with me as much as I'd like. My wife gets pissed off when I take too many pics and then review them on the LCD when I should be spending time with company (borrring!).

I would really like to get a Rebel 300D or a 10D or something to keep in the car, with a kit lens and a Tamron 70-300 or something cheap that I wouldn't have to worry about. At least then I wouldn't miss shooting opportunities.

For those times I go out with friends and a DSLR is not practical I sometimes take my trusty old 2megapixel S200 with me.

This is why I ask the question. My wife always say that my camera is so big that it's a hassle to bring around. I want to bring it more often, almost any outings (inlcuding eating outs). Here's why I want to bring my camera around. We were waiting for a seat at this Japanese barbeque place in Costa Mesa. The waiting is about 1 hour, so I let my 2 year old run around I happily snaps away.

They're always in the car ready to go.

And I don't worry about the attention--but constantly get asked what paper I work for.

At least 3 bodies with multiple lenses and flashes.

In a bright yellow pelican case.

Both work and fun--Don't want to miss an opportunity.

My wife says the same thing... and she's right - to an extent. I love bringing the camera along, but my zoom lenses(yes, even the kit lens), sometimes attract attention I really don't want (I live in NY where that kind of attention isn't always a good thing). That's one of the reasons i've been looking into primes. I can have one mounted on the body with one or two more in a small bag, and that's it. I already have the 50, and what I'm aiming for is the "1.8 Trinity" - the 28, 50 and 85 - for that "spontaneous" kind of shooting.

I use the dSLR when it's necessary and the P&S when it's necessary.

When I shoot - I use a DSLR. I am just not very happy with the P&S cameras with which I have shot (Olympus 2000Z, 5050Z and Nikon Coolpix 5400).

That said, however... I have recently converted an older Canon D60 (which is still a very nice camera) to full time Infrared. In retrospect, I wish that I had converted the Nikon Coolpix because when I am shooting with two DSLR cameras (17-55mm f/2.8 IS and 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses) it would be much easier to just slip the Coolpix in the pocket of my vest and I would have IR capability without carrying a third DSLR. On the other hand, I have a nice selection of lenses which fit Canon DSLR cameras and the D60 provides some good quality imagery.

The common reply to seeing me with a pair of cameras and lenses is, "No wonder you take such nice pictures - look at your equipment". I reply are you good cook because you own some good cookware?

I will usually carry 2 DSLR cameras with the above lenses. If I am shooting specialty stuff, like sports or nature, I will carry other lenses. Occasionally, very occasionally, I will carry a 30D and the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens alone. However, when I do; I usually miss the 70-200mm lens.

I carry the 30D and 17-55mm lens around my neck on an OPTECH strap and carry a 350D mounted with the 70-200mm lens in a Think-tank holster case at my side. I used to use a TAMRAC Zoom 19 holster case but, replaced it with the think tank model when I got my 300mm f/4L IS lens which didn't fit in the Zoom 19 but does fit in the Think tank by virtue of its expandable bottom.

Virtually all my shooting is "for fun" these days. I no longer have the stress of producing a commercially viable product although I do dabble in professional dog portraiture as a labor of love.
